82 Track Car tear down begins

82 Track Car Update Thread (New Update June 26 new alignment)
Finally got the 82 to the shop after replacing the power steering pump. Proceeded to rip out all the carpet, old seats, foam padding etc.. That tar insulation and sound deadening is both heavy and tough to pull. I temporarily mounted one of the Recaro SRD's so the car can be moved. I'll likely get back at it tomorrow again, using a heat gun to soften up the sound deadening and to get it up on the lift and put on an Xpipe into a 85 style dual pipe system to the back.
After all that, I've got the S4 suspension and brakes waiting..and some nice bent pipe (roll cage)..waiting to go in.
Sad thing is.....only recovered a couple of quarters ..few dimes and couple of pennies for my efforts LOL. Well...that and one paystub from some one down in cali..haha.. Here's a few pics below showing the progress..

Tom,
Someone had posted in the past about using dry ice to harden the sound deadening tar then hammer, chisel, shatter it in it's hardened state. It sounded easier and cleaner than the heat it up into a gooey mess approach. You might want to search for that track car prep thread.
Let me know how it goes. I'm probably not too far behind you.
Good luck and thanks for posting the pics!

I was just going to suggest the dry ice method myself, just lay it on there, wait a few then hit with a hammer and it just falls off, if you want to be quicker then put some salt over the dry ice

How much knuckle scraping did you endure with the putty knife?
The idea of loading up the car with cold packs, watching TV while it sets, then wielding a hammer and a shopvac, well, it just sounds a whole lot easier. If it works. There's gotta be a gotcha in there somewhere.

a real heat gun will heat the area real fast and the puddy knife just underminds it and it all floats up. it comes up in large pieces like hard cake frosting!
the dry ice does sound interesting, but the heat gun works pretty well.

Well....can't seem to find the "dry ice" store nearby...so I'll try the heat gun method first...and if that gets too messy..or doesn't work then I'll find some dry ice...

You would think dry ice would be common in the Pac NW, how do you mail fresh Salmon and Bears?
I've found dry ice at a local Publix. For a flat surface it's the way to go if you can get it. You'll still need a heat gun/scraper for the other areas.
