I used "De-Solv-It" to remove the tar and glue residue from the interior. I felt I was killing too many brain cells using other more caustic solutions to do the same thing. I found it at K-mart and it is a thick, clear orange color gel and was used during the Exxon Valdez clean up. I put in on with a paint brush, let it set up for a long time and then using a plastic putty knife scraped off the residue. I then used water and a rag to clean up the panel I was working on. Not flammable and no bad fumes, just a pleasent citrus smell. Doesn't harm paint either.

Yep..that's the next stage...I tried some lacquer thinner in a small area and it seemed to work but would require lots of rags and elbow grease. Ken gave me a tip to use permatex gasket remover..We've got a can at the shop..so I'll give that a go....but will probably try the citrus stuff too as a final cleanup.

As a side note...master cylinder was leaking fluid for some time before it was replaced..the underpadding was absolutely soaked with brake fluid...and on the passenger side....it was soaked with water...go figure..

And..on the number of pedals...those that know..know that three are required to drive a 928 to its fullest potential..anything else..well....one day you too will be coordinated enough to do the same LOL....

And finally...after talking to Ken..seems his Auto body shell (not that there is anything wrong with that ) apparently does not have the mounting bracket for the clutch master????? I thought all 928 bodies 85ish and back were equipped with with the bracket..?

if you are looking for 5 speed conversion parts, I cut most of the parts out the Shane's wreck, so have them on hand.

Got back at it yesterday. Ken Osage met me at the shop with his truck and trailer..John Davis and Adam B popped over too to lend a hand...got the track car up on the trailer and over to Ken's place where he went to town with the plasma cutter.
Cut out the inner doors on both sides and removed as much of the sunroof structure as possible.

The doors went easy but the sunroof is a mess of double walls, support brackets, and other things that made it tough to remove..but we got it done...and it's on its way this am to the roll cage fabricator's shop. Should be done by Tuesday next week..and then it's back to stripping and cleaning...

Of course, John D casually mentioned that the SCCA drivers class is March 28th...and I need to sign up for the Oregon SCCA..get WA membership too..and sign up for the class (three days).. Time is flying by...dang..better get at it..

My 81 euro chassis didnt have the clutch master bracket in it either.

And I agree with the plasma cutter, I have one and it is amazing what you can do with it.

You should cover the glass when making (cutting/grinding/welding) sparks! The sparks will embed in the glass.

Unless you're planning to go with all plastic windows?

Try cutting that sunroof structure out with a dremel.

I moved up to a roto-zip, and bought disks like they were water.

With the number of people hacking out sunroof structures, I wonder if it would make sense for somebody to have new sunroofless panels made. Kary bought a stripped car last weekend just to take the roof out for his car.

Either way..probably someone making a roof structure would be cool...wonder if it can be made of aluminum..or carbon fiber?...lighter..??

It's one of those tools that after having used it, you can't imagine doing a cutting job without it. Kind of like doing an oil change on your back after you've had the oppurtunity to use a lift, just ain't gonna happen. I was really amazed at the precision of the cuts. Very cool. Tom was nice enough to let me try it on his car. My first cuts looked like seismagraphs or richter scale readings, the tip pics up the slightest movements of the hand.

We were discussing that most guys use electric or air tools in removing the sheet metal from these cars, I've got to hand it to you, that is a lot of work. How long did it take for you cut out the sunroof BC? Having done it once and now knowing where are the gussets and double walls are, I think it would be about a 20 minute job with the plasma cutter.

That is what I was thinking. Epoxy/rivet it in place instead of welding.

I wouldn't trust UPS/DHL/FedEx to transport a roof panel across the country anyway...
