Exclamation The Final Word on FORD motor mounts...?

Soo...what is the final consensus on the Ford motor mounts?

-I've had a slow leak from my steering rack for some time, and it is slowly getting worse. I have the month of March off [don't ask how I managed that-], so I've decided it is time for a steering rack. I don't trust my rather average mechanical skills to rebuild the rack myself, so I guess I'm going to buy a re-built rack. Since I'm going to have the thing all pulled apart...

GOOD LAWRD! Porsche motor mounts are $229 each at one of the big three! That means $460 for two small chunks of rubber- <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Anyway, I decided to at least think about the Ford mounts. From what I've read, these are from the 4.9 liter inline-6 that fits in F150- 250 pickup trucks. A version of this same engine sits in "HappyTruck", the '66 F100 that I use for airport-car duty here in the Land Of The Mouse.

That thing looks a proper lump. Cast iron, nothing left to chance, I cannot believe that it would weigh less than the 520 lb mounted under the shark's hood. Why wouldn't a Ford mount work?

Yeah, I feel stupid about even thinking about "rigging" my Porsche- it just seems so cheap, but you've got to realize that this comes from someone who regularly takes said Porsche shopping for clothes...at the thrift store!

HEY- they've got some kewl stuff there! I even took my mom there in the 928 once- she got a kick out of going there in it!

But what I really want to know, before spending this much money....what is the scoop? Do they work or not?

Normy,

Call Zims for the rack. <a href="http://www.allzim.com" target="_blank">www.allzim.com</a>
They have a decent price in the $280 range.
No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

Normy,

Have you seen this discussion:

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=004460" target="_blank">http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=004460</a>

I would replace the power steering pump low pressure hose.

I put my $175 Devek mounts in last week. They fit like a glove. Stick with OEM parts! The Ford mounts are not as Beefy and its not all that much more $$ for OEM if you shop around. My local NAPA Parts store had the ford mounts for $119 each. Big Deal! My Pappy always told me to - Do the job right the first time and you won't have to do it again later!
Trust me, you will sleep better.

Thumbs up

FWIW-

My 87 S4 has had the Anchor 2698 mounts installed for nearly 2 years now...no complaints - yet.

Price??? Less than half a pedigree set of Porsche's - but then again...I have an Alpine Stereo too.

So much for being a purist...

Normy,
I've just had the Anchor mounts installed. I found that I have saved a packet of $ even though I had to have them shipped out to Australia!!.
I can't believe its the same car drives smoooooooth as silk it feels like the tyres/suspension are not as rough as well.
Anyway my mechanic found that the locating pin did not fit in the slot otherwise went in correctly. (Also note original(Porsche) mount locating pin is thicker then Anchor version) HTH.

If you have decided to try Anchor 2698 mounts and want them at 1/2 price, go to rockauto.com or 866-ROCKAUTO. I received mine in several days. ~$28 each plus ~$7 shipping. They are genuine Anchor mounts (at least they came in Anchor boxes.

It's been stated before, that the originals can last 20 years or so. New originals may be the last mounts you'll need. Anchor could be a 3-5 yr. replacement item. I had a 928 GURU tell me the other day that these were $70,000 cars once. Why try and save a few $ on non-OEM parts in critical applications? I couldn't agree more.
IMHO, get the original Porsche mounts and be done with it.

BTW, I wonder if the Anchor mounts if installed, would pass a PPI by a perpective buyer if you ever decide to sell your car?

Sorry Greg but 20 years is a complete load of .. well you know. MY 91 mounts were shot in 99 and maybe before that, who knows. Another local guys 90GT mounts were also shot after 10 years but again may have gone west years before.

My 91 was replaced with Porsche mounts back then and was included with a whole bunch of work that I had done as part of the purchase deal.

Why do people choose to use $50-$100 parts instead of $350-$450 on genuine articles ? Because people who do their own wrenching see that they can save and spend $200 on other much needed parts. And they have a choice.

And thats the key, it is a choice, the pros and cons have been pointed and discussed many times.

Chris,

Yes, it's a choice. I'm just stating my opinion and which choice I have made.

BTW, how have your OEM Porsche mounts held up since being replaced in 1999?

Greg
