The Final Word on FORD motor mounts...?

People will spend 8 times more then they need to for a motor mount, but then they call progressive for thier car insurance. Amazing.

I've only seen a couple of cars where the mounts aren't shot and the engine actually rocks. If the non OEM mounts allow a few more people to replace their motor mounts then that has to be a good thing. So what if they don't last 16 years, I'm sure the mounts on mine have been solid for some time and I'm damn sure that my car won't last another 16 years. To pay someone to replace my motor mounts with genuine parts would cost about 20% of the value of my car (assuming I get the engine running again) - that simply isn't going to happen.

I put the Anchor 2698 mounts in my '91 GT. With the extra washer suggested, the engine was so high that the bell housing hit the tunnel.
With no extra washers, the engine fit perfectly. ???

Has anyone explored replacing the early mounts without going to the Anchor type? I started to look toward this a while back, but my mounts aren't real failed, just starting to look a little squished.
As I recall, what I came up with was that a simple adapter (easily made at home) and any of a variety of flat "sandwich" mounts would work, along with retaining the dampers on the early cars.

I installed Ford mounts 2.5yrs ago and they're still serving beautifully. Motor height is perfetly stock (new) .. shocking to see how much they raised it as it was way low on DEAD factory ones. I believe factory ones have a flaw, the metal will cut the rubber by design on any major bump.

Great, interesting discussion. OK, for a total moron like me..... how would I know if my MM were bad anyway? Mine are 16 years old, how would I know? What are the symptoms?

Jayc67, the links MikeN provided are excellent:They define the cause(heat/age = collapsed mount),observation (spread of the safety hooks on the MM assembly), and the cure( the joy of MM replacement).
As to symptoms (your question), I've found less written. The problem is obviously xmission of eng. vibration to the chassis.
What I'm experiencing in the '88 @~ 32K is a "coarseness"/lack of "smoothness" on cold start-up which persists for ~10 -15 min of running.
I can feel the vibration through the throttle, steering, and seat of you know what! As the eng. heats up, everything becomes smoother: presumably the MM's softed and still have some function left; however, these things never get better - so, with replacement in mind, my question....
What I've read of 'shimming' the Ford/Anchor mounts seems to only apply to the light duty #2696 units the guys first tried when experimenting for alternatives. The #2698 (available to me as 'Car Quest' #31-3679HY) measures 79mm in height - within a mm of the quoted Porsche OEM height.
Can the #2698's be best installed without shims?? - presume this to be the case, but still hear about guys installing 'shims' of unspecified thickness.
While this replacement sounds like a 'bear of a job', imagine the $$ if using oem parts at the Por$che $hop!!
