If we're going to K1 in Irvine, I'll probably go, its right by my school.

What date are you guys aiming for?

I still say we should class the weights.

I'll start - I want to be in the 265-400lb class, as I am 265.

Andy can be in the 90-115lb range.

This place looks fun. The last time I did carting was at Malibu Grand Prix in Los Angeles County somewhere, but then I was 17 and helava lot lighter. 20+ years later and man I sure hope those carts have heavy duty tires

It is really fun. The karts are pretty torque-y, and surprisingly the tires actually stick pretty well (compared to the karts at Dromo 1, who use concrete floors for the track.)

It's looking like March 1st, but that is subject to change. Hope to see you there!

We should try to come up with some kind of handicap system based on weight. SCCA has what they call a PAX system in SOLO, based on a cars potential performance. Maybe K1 has some kind of system in place to handicap based on weight? I'll have to ask... if not, we should formulate something.

I do know that at K1 they can variate a single kart's speed electronically, so maybe they have some sort of handicap they can compute into the karts

In my experience they only use that feature to keep everyone slow on the parade lap and also to "educate" miscreants exhibiting, shall we say, aggressive behavior. It would be interesting to find out if this function can be used incrementally. I don't think this feature is installed in gas karts, not that this matters in our case.

What time are you thinking on that day? As usual, trying to decide between a real early start on Sat., or a hotel Fri. night.

Funny about this. At the last get together in Carlsbad, I felt that the first kart was more responsive, and especially had better tires. Not so said the lap timer.

This kind of activity takes more than just light weight, although that helps a lot. Good lines and technique reward you with good lap times. Hint-- the fastest line is not directly through two points... The brakes and sliding slow you down a lot, and karts take a wile to come back up to speed, so adjust your lines and braking spots to avoid sliding.

If you want to go faster than Mongo, invest in some off-peak practice time. Learn the fast lines, passing spots, and above all hone your skills. Learn from the folks who are going fast already. Drive in more traffic, and learn how to 'manage' folks who get too aggressive. Then when the crowd shows up, you'll be ready.

There's always the option to move a little closer to civilization.

I was thinking that a gathering at the cars-n-coffee x-travaganza in Irvine might be a good start to the day. That ends no later than about 10 am. It's minutes from there to K1. But that makes the day really early for folks in SD as well as those from the desolate wastelands of the south san-wah-keen valley. So maybe Bill's idea for karting in the mid afternoon, followed by an early dinner meeting nearby is a good one. That way folks can get home before Sunday breakfast.

So early C&C for locals, hang out for a while in Irvine until the rest of the group gathers at K1. Maybe go get in a few practice laps??

Very good plan Bob! I like the idea of dropping in on the car show for those that would like to. Traffic is MUCH nicer in the early morning, at least coming up from SD county, so I really do not see how anyone could really object to that. We could plan on starting the karting at say Noon - 1 pm'ish so that anyone not able or willing to go to the car display will be able to just show up and race. Maybe plan on meeting at whatever restaurant we chose at @ 3:00 pm. How's that sound to everyone?

Yes!! Food after a hard day of Racing! You guys in OC are the experts in Restaurant locations. I'd say, pick a nice one that is family oriented and reasonable "bringing my wife and 5 month old with me." Please no "Hooters," although that is kinda racing oriented atmosphere.
