Factory 928 Cup racers?

What intake?
Oh, there is an intake in Fabio's post...
Sean, you have got to change your avatar so you won't upstage the rest of the posts!
Kidding aside, seems like a straight forward intake system, not like the S3 and S4 intakes. Probably much like Threshies design?
Nice photo(s) contribution Sean!

I found the article that went along w/ the specifications Adam found. So for the sake of clarity, here are the links to the various documents once again with some explanations:
1994 Letter about the factory 928 Cup cars
1998 Letter about the Group H 928 race car
Specifications of the Group H car (file says 928GTCup.exe but it's really about the Gr. H car)
German magazine article about the Group H 928 race car
THe first file is the only one regarding the Cup cars which had relatively minor modifications from stock. It had a factory suspension package, brake kit and 944 cylinder head oiling mods. The last three files are about the Group H car, which had more extensive modifications. This one had the intake, cams, sump mods, head mods, running on 16" dia Goodyear slicks, etc. I was confused about the 928GTCup.exe file a few years ago and Kim Crumb confirmed that the specifications were of the extensively modified Gr. H car in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/37839-porsche-928-gt-cup-track-car.html
Re: Porsche in Indycar - Porsche had two cracks at Indy. The one mentioned above w/ the flat-6 motor was from around 1980 and didn't actually run at Indy due to controversy over boost levels. The factory pulled out of the race after getting screwed by the sanctioning body.
Porsche took a second shot at Indy after bailing out of F1 in 1987. They ended up running at Indy in the 1988-1990 w/ a 2.65L V8 turbo. Here's a pic of that engine:
I'm guessing the intake of the V8 motor is the one they're referencing in the specs of the Group H car.

The Kim Crumb info has been around for a while, there was also an article in a German car magazine on one of the cars, including a photo of the different inlet system. They claimed something like 388BHP form a 5 litre GT engine with the mods.
More recently I got a list of additional 928 Motorsport parts from Porsche Ag, that included 2 plastic 'catch tanks', modified hoses and some modifications to the clutch - alas, they had none of the parts left in stock in Germany. Its possible there maybe some left in a dealer network somewhere - I'll try and dig the part numbers out if anyone has a way of checking the US dealer stocks.

I think you will find more details about the indy (Mezger) V8 motor in
"Porsche: Excellence Was Expected"
by Karl Ludvigsen
Price: $259.95
Bit outside my price class..... so I have no idea how much info!

Great posts everyone! I really appreciate the information brought out in this thread, thank you!
The small turbo V8 looks very much like our own 32 valve engines with a "few" modifications.

This has been mentioned before as some kind of fix for oiling issues. How exactly does it differ from normal 928 setup? 928 parts are just simple ball bearing ball and spring to prevent oil draining back down from head. Is 944 setup more complex and have other functions as well? Will it for example prevent oil going to head if pressure is below certain level? In theory 928 spring does that too but its so weak that it will not have any meaningful effect on rod bearing problems for example.

I remember going to the long beach grand prix. I could have sworn i saw a 5 liter V8 or V10 or maybe it was this engine, on one of the race cars.
I do remember it looked a lot like a 928 engine, even though i had only owned my 928 for a short time. (the date was sometime after 1988)

398hp
rims were 12.5 front and 13.5" rear.
I wish the intake pictures were a little better. looks like a big plennu with runners of a very short size, running to the cylinders. I think this might be easy to fabricate using parts from our own S4 intake.
anyone got an old S4 intake or better yet, an 86 intake i could buy cheap and do a first pass??
I think i would make it so it would incorporate a larger throttle body, maybe from a VET and our MAF, with the larger tube to enclose it.

Speaking of 928 racers. Both French Le Mans '83 and '84 entry and Brumos Daytona + Nurburgring car can be seen in this BF Goodrich marketing film:
