I like your reasoning - a new exhaust is no longer a want it's a NEED - to facilitate better wrenching! Now who could argue with that!!

New exhaust is DEFINITELY on the shopping list (just as soon as I get the mechanicals sorted out). It's leaking now so it has a rumble to it. My wife likes her car to sound nice and muscular but not too loud. So I'll be looking for some advice on exhaust systems in the near future. High flow cats sound good to me!

Well........since you said "Please", you wouldn't have to twist my arm too much. I'm having so much fun with this project, I'm thinking of working on 928's only. I need help!

You did it the easy way, as Tony shows in the link in the LATE EDIT at the begginning of my write-up.

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the numbers - now I don't have to look 'em up. 0.13 sounds like it's in good shape - that's great news.

I read your post above previously and it inspired me to do it myself. It is a fantastic writeup - I really enjoyed the pics and the explanations.

No, but it probably would have been bad for my ego. I wouldn't have even thought to try that. Had you pulled the plugs for some reason?

NAAWWW, it couldn't be that. Even though I'm 6'6" with a 240 pound titanium alloy chassis, my arm is NOT impressive. More likely it's the 84's MUST be easier to turn than the newer 928s.

I'm 5'9" with a cream cheese and bacon fat chassis, and I can't imagine turning an '84 over by the fly wheel. I guess with enough valves open you could move it a little ways without too much resistance.

I'm fortified with donuts. I ended up rotating the engine 1/2 turn. The clamp bolt was facing up. If you've never tried it, next time give it a shot - see what happens.

I'm a 6' Matchstick man (Google L.S.Lowry) and I can do it - it's just a case of waiting for the pressures to dissipate on the compressions.

Good on ya Dwayne - fair dinkum job you're doing there.

Keep going at this rate and you will have an engine bay and undercarriage that Kurt Rottner would proud of. - Let's see if anyone here remembers him.

I'm earmarkin this thread for future reference to add to the mm & flexplate writeups. Very good posts & info by all. Great write up & especially the pics Dwayne. I'm definitely a visual kind of guy & need the pics to have any chance to do work myself!

BTW, forget the deserts of Kalifornia or Texas, I think the Sunshine State of Florida is callin ya should you decide to move somewhere!

Wow, my next big job and a fantastic writeup. This thread should be in the DIY thread.

Dwayne,

Thanks a million. I have been staring at the motor mounts I bought for a year now. Your photos and detailed directions will be with me when I finally crawl under my 928 to change out the mounts. First, however, I have to figure out how to clean everything off so I see what I'm doing. You obviously are conscientious in your work. I sure wish that a mechanic as precise as you are lived in my area.

Dwayne,

I know it helped a lot to pull your engine, but what materials/solutions did you use to get it so sparkling clean? Any 928 owner would love to have an engine and undercarriage area looking that pristine.

Harvey
