Be prepared to leave any car you take to the track behind. Or in best cases trailer home.
A safe and reliable track car is most of the time not compatible with a road car and abosolutely not a daily driver. If I were in your boat I'd get something cheap and track ready like a spec Miata or 944. By the time you start doing more and more track time it will make financial sense to have a dedicated car with proper security equipment, suspension and tires that would not make sense on the road. When you are within tenths of a second on each lap in a momentum car and you have budget to spare it is time to move up to a higher HP car.
But then again, big HP cars might be more fun if you are only doing the occasional DE.

This is a VERY good point.....I don't think my insurance would be happy with my crashing a new Z06 at the track.....
A spec Miata is the cheapest way to race.....since 100% competitive cars are available for $15K or so.....even less if you "rent" them....
But I just hate the idea of cruising around the track in such a gutless car....ya ya some of them turn far better times than I do in my 928....but thats a race car vs a street car....
I might have to drive one to see? Sometimes free revving gutless cars are fun to drive!

Although a spec Miata is clearly the most practical way to go learn racing, at least for me, track time is about having _fun_. I'll never be a serious racer, and my S4 puts the biggest grin on my face when I drive it, which is why it's in the garage instead of a more serious/practical choice.

If you are really serious about wanting to track/race a 928, seems like there have been several already prepared 928's sold here, and i"m sure some more will come through. Typically nowhere near the cost of the vette or GTS, and they've already done all the dirty work. Seems like you have 928 that you can street drive that you really like, all you need is a manual one ready for the track that can be driven there easily enough. I wouldn't worry so much about the S4+ portion.

It seems the answer is a cheapo S4 manual (I think I might have one in my sights) to beat on at the track (which will turn into a stupid expensive to own S4)...keep sharky as a nice street driven stock auto...... then start saving $$$ to find the GTS I really want!

Why not do as I have done and "race " an old very brown 1980 with few modifications. There are always faster and slower cars. On a typical day about 1/2 the cars are slower than what I run usually even a GT3 or two
Or for a real race car try a 944 Spec Racer they sell for $9,000-12,000 ready to go. And very close racing very restricted modifications but are no longer street legal. That means trailer and tow vehicle. Then where do you store the trailer? If you get an open trailer that means no security so you get a closed trailer which carries more stuff but is heavier so you need a bigger tow vehicle. That requires more space to park them so..... Then the MPG sucks so better get a diesel .

You must have not seen my 928 at the track.
(that is equal set up mods for equal set up mods) a 911 with a set of headers as the only mod, and about equal with a 996 in almost all areas of the track.

Now, my buddy Bruce, of BMW fame, just got back from T-hill. Must be nice to borrow a friends C6 corvette with 500rwhp and tool around the track with a set of new hoosiers ! he was clipping off 2:03s, and that was with a passenger! that would be great. Now, the real question, stock S4 with $15k stroker engine getting 450rwhp, or $70k C6 vet??
The vet is diffcult to cage as well, and is the reason why speedGT is running the C5 chassis with a CF body kit of the C6
It all goes back to bang for buck. if money was no option, i would be driving a 997gt3cup. if it was and i still needed to drive my car to the track, i think i would stay 928 and just pour money into it to be near what Anderson has. im sure i could make a car near as fast, without all the stuff he has. i dont think dry sump, bars everywhere, electric PS, etc is buying him much time. however it is pretty darn nice. Fan doesnt have any of this kind of stuff, and it is near as fast, maybe even faster at some tracks. if you could build a 500rwhp 928 and have it for your dedicated track car, with some limited interior like i have to be able to drive it to the tracK? how cool would that be?
However, a turn key racer like a C06, but after you figure out how to put a cage in it, would be a ton of fun too. Like a stock Viper with some minor mods. big and heavy, but real fast. its all about the amount of money you want to spend.
on the other side of the spectum, you could buy one of these honda civics with 300rwhp and 2200lbs and run pretty fast too, but heck, i don't know about you , but in my mind, a race car should sound like a race car. thats half the fun of my 928!

Now you're beginning to understand why I built the '82 Euro in the first place! I only replaced it because I wanted to go faster in Open Road Racing. 162 mph top speed wasn't allowing me to get to the target speeds I was looking for.
I know someone who used to race his C6 Z06 in ORR who has a roll bar for sale, if you want to go that way. Its a custom job, very well done, and he was asking around $1,000 for it. For what I'm using the car for, the occasional track day and 155 class in ORR, the Z06 doesn't require anything in addition to a Sharkbar (not sure how they came up with that name!) to attach your shoulder harnesses, and the hardbar to attach your lap and sub belt.
If you want something fun and reliable to beat on and don't want to sweat about turning it into scrap metal, buy a 5 spd S4 with a beater interior and strip it.

It all comes down to the $15k ???? Do I think I can make a reliable track beast S4 5 speed and stay around $15K.....with a stockish engine (only exhaust mods initially)..... I think I should be able to build an S4 that will turn 2:05's or better at thunderhill, 1:45's at laguna & 1:50's at sears for around that price (once I learn to drive better)....
Wheels-tires-cage-seats-harness are the bulk of the $$$$ after the car is purchased.....but a stripped stock 5 speed LSD with stock brakes (pagid oranges & super blue), some Koni-hypercoils & seriously rolled fenders, lexan windows is good enough to start with....basically a mirror of Kiborts 928...
My goal is to be out there in SCCA ITE class in a couple years!!!!! Hopefully with a field of 4-5 928's tearing up the track in norcal!
