Default Big $$$ ??? GTS, track shark or new Vette?

I'm starting to look for my next fun car..... right now the choices are narrowed down to an S4+ 928 to be a dedicated track-race shark... a pristine 5 speed GTS.....or (the sacrilege) a new Vette for a daily driver/occasional DE car?

The 88 S4 will be staying......just retired from track duty either way (except for the GTS..then I would still DE the 88)......

I've driven a couple new Vettes.....which are VERY nice...but not cheap either at $50k+ ($80k for Z06)..... A new car with bluetooth, stability control & navigation sounds pretty nice....of course the mid 12's or better 1/4 mile and at least 190mph top speed in a car that gets at least 26mpg with a warranty for 100K miles isn't bad either!

There is a lot of Vette out there. But very, very few 5 speeds GTS...

I would have a hard time choosing between a used C5 ZO6 or a new "regular" C6.

Track shark would be the least expensive (as long as you limit yourself to near-stock power) and the most fun.

Well.......you have been talking about the new vettes for a while now and that has to be about the best bang for the buck that there is. No doubt a great car, and W/ a warranty it is also peace of mind, until the car gets old then do you keep it or sell before the warranty is up? For me I would get a 5 speed GTS the new Vette may out perform the GTS but to me the passion IS the GTS. But....... if Sharkey is now the dedicated D.E. car I know you have been talking about a track car that is a 5 speed. So how does that work? Sounds like you might be happier W/ a 5 speed track car and..... could you stand seeing Sharkey getting beat up a the track? Dirt wise I mean.

Ice- Seriously, consider a 911 if you want a track car. While the shark is fun to drive, there is no subbing a rear engined Porsche that's been on a diet to get your juices flowing.

I speak of only the truth. Give me a 928 for the highway, but give me a 911 for the track!!

Go to the SCCA classifieds and check out the cost for a race prepped Vette or Viper... then ask some of the 928 racers how much they've spent on their cars.... the Vettes are a bargain....

On the other hand the 928's will attrack all the attention... and everyone will walk right past the Vettes and Vipers

Ok Brian, maybe you need to think what you'll be driving as your daily driver if you get the 928 track car.

That said I don't know what the conventional wisdom is for a duel mode track/street car. Perhaps someone who's done it could kick in some thoughts on that.

Personally I wouldn't mind getting a later S4 or GT for my weekend road trips & serve occasionally as my daily driver on the street and maybe keep the 78 for playing around with.

A 944 turbo is the perfect stable mate for a 928.

Twice the price or more is a bargain? Unless you're building a stroker, building a track 928 is no different than building a track Vette or Viper. Same shocks, same wheels, same tires, same cage/seats/harnesses/nets...

All the more reason for a 911, R compounds, decent fluid and pads, stiffer springs and some shocks. Drive it to, drive it there, then drive it home from the track. Great grocery getter to.
