Market for 85-86 US Injection Harnesses?

Default Market for 85-86 US Injection Harnesses?

Is there much of a market for The fuel injection harness for our 85-86, USA MY 928s?

I know my harness is in serious need of replacement, the OEM harnesses which i am less than impressed with cost around $1100. I am currently designing a harness that will be constructed with a high temperature nylon, corrugated split loom. The harness will utilize all of the factory correct color coding, retain sheilded cable for MAG sensor, and have a 31 pin Duetsch bulkhead connector with removable pins mounted on the engine side of the firewall. The bulkhead connector will easily facilitate isolation and troubleshooting of the injection components. Additionally, the split loom construction will make harness splicing/repair possible where it is impractical on the OEM harness. If there is a enough interest i will produce these harnesses for others. I will document progress on this thread as the project comes along.

what type of a price would people be looking at for this? and I would recommend leaving a few pins on the connector empty should one decide they wished to add a knock sensor to the engine.

looks like the harness is going to good use though.

Colin, thanks again for the donor harness! I am hoping to shave a significant amount of cost and provide a superior alternative to the OEM unit. I only have a partial bill of materials right now because i want to build the actual cable-form and then measure exact lengths and sizes of the split loom and associated elbows that will be needed to cover it. So with that in mind, i will be able to give a more specific price as the project progresses.

As far as the spare wires go on the Deutsch bulkhead connector, i had planned on doing that but I think 31 is the largest pin count available for this connector type. I do not have my drawings with me but i think 29 pins will be occupied, so that only leaves two pins. I decided on Deutsch because i think they're the best thing as far as quality and durability go.

What time frame do you expect to have this ready? The reason I'm asking is that I plan on doing a complete intake/vc refresh over the winter and it would be great to be able to replace these brittle wires while I'm in there.

Depending on how you do it, it may work for 85-86 Euro which is extremely close to an 84 Euro (all the wires are the same, but the CE panel connections are different). Something to think about when you're adding extra wires.

If this project works out the way I intend, i would be willing to produce harnesses for other MY 928s as well... provided i can get donor harnesses to work with.

Underdog, the project is well underway right now I have the materials arriving on Monday to build the cable form and once that is done I can get an exact measurement of what will be needed for the split loom and elbows to cover it. I am reusing the 25 pin connector housings (with new pins) from a donor harness for the LH and EZF brains on the prototype harness only. Any harness produced for others will utilize new 25 pin connector housings/pins which i believe are available from John Speake. At any rate I should be able to start producing harnesses for people around the first of the year.

I thought someone else was making these??? maybe for the earlier years 79 to 84, I know that if the S4 harnesses were made It would be real tough to not consider it, the S4 harnesses seem to be getting pretty brittle and the insulation on some of the wires by the hot post crumbles, as well a the temp II wires and others at the front of the engine, Thanks for taking the time to research and consider the MFG of these crucial parts

Ok, i mis-spoke about the 25 pin housings for the LH/EZF being available from John Speake. John has informed me that he does not stock them but they may be available from Bosch if i can get the part #. John, i hope it's ok that i mention this. Anyway John had mentioned, and i had also thought that it would make sense to reuse the 25 pin connector shells from the factory harnesses albiet with new pins and wires.

Doing it this way could save a considerable amount on the cost of these harnesses which certainly would be passed on. Let's face it, most of these harnesses will be in perfect condition from the firewall back to the LH/EZF brains. Most of the problems these harnesses have are on the engine side of the firewall relating to heatsoak and subsquent insulation cracking. The lion's share of the cost of these harnesses will certainly come from the connectors, so it only makes sense to reuse the connectors on the passenger side of the firewall that are perfectly serviceable.

I am certainly open to any suggestions or ideas.

Alright, me too, I'll buy one. I knew when I decided to buy this car that I was going to replace the stuff that can wear out in 21 years eventually anyway. Might as well be sooner than later. Just keep us posted when you get 'em made.
