Need help in San Diego with GTS!!!
I just did my good deed for the day and helped an older gentleman figure out his truck wasn't really stuck in a pothole. He was stuck because he left his parking brake on! I've made some bone head mistakes in the past, but that's a scary one.
In any case, I was hoping someone in the San Diego area might be able to help my son out with his '93 GTS. He was hearing some noise coming from the rear and took it to a shop. They put it on a lift, put the car in gear, and the right rear wheel seems to be wobbling a bit. Since I'm in NorCal, I can't help him out and he has about zero mechanical ability. I don't know if the rear wheel bearing is shot, the bolt holding the axle on is somehow coming loose, or if something else with the rear suspension is a problem. I don't trust most shops to know what they're doing, so I figured I'd see if someone can either help him figure out what's wrong or recommend a good 928 shop in San Diego.
Thanks!

My stepsons in SD, of course he's probably got as much mechanical sense as your son (maybe
less, since he's still in college). Too bad it didn't happen two weeks ago, I was down there dropping
him off and spend 3 days there.
PS. You sure he didn't "brush" a curb again?

Thanks George. I might have to head down there later this week to check it out myself, although I'll still need to find a good shop or place to get it fixed since my tools are all up here.
By the way, the old guy in the truck kind of reminded me of a certain ORR trip you and I were on where you had to call a tow truck to get your S4 started. Remember the reason?

Why dont you see if the shop can try to tighten the rear wheel axle nut 332ft/lb or a good impact wrench should make things safe to drive, thats what it sounds like from your description......., hopefully thats all it needs sometimes a loose nut will make bearing sound like its toast

Good idea about the rear axle nut. Should be easy enough for any shop to check. I'm not sure how it would have come loose with those torque specs, but I suppose pretty much anything can happen.

I wonder how wobbly the wheel was.....that nut is torque'd to over 300ftlbs...I can't see it getting loose.....I vote for wheel bearing or suspension bushings

I have records back to '97 and I've owned the car since '98. I've never replaced the rear axles or boots and the PO didn't do it, although it was probably done before he owned it. Last time I was under the car the boots and CV joints were good. I have a 3/4" torque wrench I use to when I replace the rear axles, but I don't usually replace the nut. Maybe I should do that in the future if that turns out to be the problem.

I have seen this problem many times and it sure is a simple place to start.
