if there is any lining on the shoes leave em in. can't see them and they only are used to hold the car still or one emergency stop, right?

The only way the lining should be gone is if someone drove the car with the ebrake on. I've seen a few older cars where the brake lining was cracked or broken and those should definitely be replaced. They're a pain to adjust but on a 5 speed, its nice to have them working properly!

I did the max adjustment at the handle and got just a whisper of contact so I ordered the shoes. I'll be pissed if I discover there is plenty of shoe left, just needs adjustment at the star. I don't recall what the shoes cost but I'm sure they weren't cheap.

IIRC they aren't cheap. There's a local place the relines brakes but it takes them a few days-- not conducive to the instant-gratification part of me so I'd probebly just order a set.

Bill, I have a large collection of brake spring tools saved from my long-ago just-get-me-through-school hobby-business. I guess I need to look at the WSM and PET diagrams to see what the fuss is about. Generally I like spring, with the warmer weather and all. Now I'm nervous!
