Why do I doubt that it's the axle nut?

I vote for rear wheel bearing and bring along a new rear hub...

Those rear bearings are not fragile though.

I beg to differ there Brendan. The ex-wife whacked a curb pretty hard in a previous 928 and the wheel bearing (much to Jim B's disbelief!) was one of the casualties.

How big was the curb? The bearing is larger than my hand! Double row, packed tight with good grease.

Yeah, I know how big the bearing is, I replaced it . It wasn't the size of the curb as much as the speed and angle at which it was hit (fast and flush). It was a fairly low asphalt curb on a freeway onramp. The car started spinning and she never took her foot out of it. Some people have to learn driving lessons the hard way... You should have seen the bends (plural) in the control arm bolt, the loooong one.

pmooradian - I talked to your son. He has some, uh, interesting hours, but tomorrow is his day off. Hopefully we can try and take took see in the afternoon between my trip to 928intl (yes, Bill, small delay in my trip up there) and my 5 year old son's parent-teacher night (ooh - cookies and pizza!).

Otherwise, it will have to wait until Saturday afternoon, after my NASD/SEC examination.

Thanks Brendan. He did get a flat the other day. I'd be interested to know if both rear rims are straight or if it looks like he curbed it and bent something. It wouldn't be the first time. I owe you a dinner and/or drinks next time I'm in town! You choose the place!

Let me get to see the car and take off the wheel, and find out if I can actually help. As RandyV our infamous moderator has mentioned, I have a great nack at taking things apart, and putting them back together much more slowly. But I know every nut on bolt on these cars, so that may help.

For anyone who was following this thread, thanks to Brendan for troubleshooting the noise from the rear axle on the GTS! Turns out your diagnosis was correct.

My son took the car to Personalized Auto Haus in San Diego this morning and they confirmed a bad rear wheel bearing. I was expecting to get raked over the coals on the repair, since they had a Carrera GT and RUF 911 Turbo in the shop when my son was there, but the quoted repair bill was $350. Pretty reasonable in my book, considering just the wheel bearing is $95 at 928 Int. Hopefully, they don't find any additional problems while they're in there. Car should be ready tomorrow.

That is an excellent price if they stick to the estimate. A lot of stuff has to be removed, the hub and bearing have to be pressed out and pressed back in CORRECTLY (I carelessly ruined the first one I did) and parts put back on.

What problem did you have with reassembly? Did the center of the bearing move on you when you put the hub back in?

I talked to your son today Paul. Hopefully the car got into good hands. It was a very serious rumble. WAY more than I was expecting before I rode in the car. Wow.

I'd like to see the bearing when it gets out. I'd like to find out what the true failure was. It was described by your son that it all went from silent to that loud in less than 2 weeks. I showed him my two removed ones in the garage.
