Default OE water pump? Jim Bailey.

Six years ago I replaced the water pump when the impellor fell off the shaft. A reputable 928 mechanic told me it was a common fault. The replacement pump has never given trouble but a recent post about “Chinese copy” pumps made me wonder if my first pump was a factory part.

I still have it so I checked it out closely and found that although the impellor, pump body and pulley all have authentic-looking 928 part numbers none corresponds to PET. The body number is 928 106 140 OR. I’ve never seen a genuine Porsche part with a number like that before. These two icons, (couldn’t get a good photo) presumably the ID of the manufacturer, appear on the body and the pulley. Can anybody identify them or tell if this is a factory part?

Academic interest only, but my guess is that it is not. And if not would it be acceptable as a core for a rebuild? Mr Bailey sir?

Hi Colin,
The number with OR at the end is the casting number.
I would say with the factory casting number that the part was original.
Whether it was new or an original that had been reconditioned is a more difficult question.

I sell a lot of reconditioned pumps and some have those marks and the casting number and some do not. IIRC the OEM manufacturer was Laso.

Never sold a new pump as they are toooo expensive for a lot of owners.
I prefer the metal impellar as it stands a better chance of staying on the shaft than the plastic.
I also think that due to the very small turnover of new pumps you stand a chance of getting one that has been sitting on a shelf for a long time.
Just me 2c.
Roger

Your pump is not a Chinese knock off. I have one that I showed to some at Frenzy 11. The casting is rough and no numbers can be found anywhere on the pump.

That was an original so OK as core. Also to clarify the Laso mentioned by Roger is an aftermarket NOT original. It is at least made in Germany the casting however is much less "finished" does have a metal impeller... NO PORSCHE numbers and says LASO on it. They started in 1965 making replacement water pumps make BMW , VW etc.

Except when the metal impellar does fall off (and they can) your block can suffer severe damage. I've seen two 928's in Green Bay suffer from this.

New Laso pumps are avialable for $265 with no core charge. They come complete with the tensioner pin and cross bracket as well as a new TDC pointer. I have two of the later styles in stock.

Jim,
The two big Euro suppliers list Laso as the OEM. Who was the first OEM?
Best,
Roger

Roger
Who are "The two big Euro suppliers"?

BTW, I'm with Enzo on the plastic impellor. A loose metal impellor nearly cost me an engine block on the better-half's Ford once. 'Devcon' plastic metal saved it. Wouldn't dream of doing that to the worse-half's Porsche of course.

Colin,
I understand where you and Enzo are coming from, however in my experiance the metal impellar moving on the shaft is a very slow process and causes leaks and noise long before it gives up and damages the engine. The plastic impeller is more prone to coming of the shaft and causing problems that you are not aware of until it is to late - overheating.
The plastic impeller rebuilds are hard to get anyway - I think Jim at 928 Int can get them sometimes. Last time I thought of going that direction they were not available.

Colin,
Trade secret 8>), however they are wholesalers for OEM parts.

Gentlemen:

I have seen a great number of failed 928 water pumps. Guess what the manufacturer of EVERY SINGLE ONE was.

LASO.

On y 928's I instal only good reconditioned pumps from International or Specialists or Utah. I sent back a painted pump to Vortex; and the good guys WILL NOT accept a LASO core.
