Greg & I attended the autoX at the Altamont today...it was open to all types of cars, being sponsored by a Dodge SRT club...so there was lots of Dodge SRT models around...damm do those sound mean!! Not as good as a 928, but pretty darn good....some where quite quick around the course too....a SRT8 Jeep put down some very good times.....not bad for a nearly 5K lb SUV.... Greg did a very good 42.9..... I managed a 44.8.... plus a run that didn't trip the lights for some reason, it felt better...but who knows? Greg rode with me in the early sessions to give me some pointers on autoX....which did help shave a couple seconds later in the day! Anyway here are the pics.....I like my heavy braking old school muscle car look pic.....big Brembos do stop well!....had no problems with braking.....traction was another story....the track was quite dusty so it was a constant battle with traction...burnouts...drifting...etc....less powerful lower torque cars had an advantage for sure!

I started trying the new theory of "brakes are a on-off switch"....so I was really hard on the brakes...just before ABS or lockup....that plus my 190mm rear ride height tends to exaggerate the lower front end (front is 155mm)....I did manage a couple sweet controlled drifts in the really low traction right hander.....even the miatas were spinning out there!

You did very well today. You shaved down your times every run you did, which really is the point to Auto-Xing. However you did miss a verry important tip in which you can see me doing in the first picture. The very first thing you have to do before you go out on the track is kneel in front of your car and pray to the Auto-X Gods. This can also be applied to drivers ed.

It was a lot of fun yesterday......good to see another 928 out there.....the bummer is my last run, which felt the best...did not get timed.....after looking over my times they seemed to get 2 seconds better per run....48-46-44-??? I would be happy with a 43....but who knows.... oh well.....

The fastest time was about a mid 37.xx in a supercharged miata that ran Hoosier autoX slicks all around...but 275hp in 2400lbs will be fast! The next closest was a bunch of cars around 40....nobody was even close to that miata....it sounded sweet on the track too...a real scream to it! A bone stock 06 Viper showed up and turned a 41 with minimal practice.....I'm sure it could have been much closer on better tires!

Brian, it sounds like you and Greg had a good day. Remind me to ask you about the "on-off switch". Sorry I couldn't make it. Are they talking about doing another one this year?

I think there will be another one later this year...... Hopefully with the same course....maybe a touch less tire pressure would improve traction..... Whats funny is I don't think I have ever used the brakes hard enough to lock up or hit the ABS.... It did come close in the nose wheelie pic...just barely skidded a front tire..

I plan on going to the PCA one too....since I'm off that day...but the bummer with the PCA course is they tend to me MUCH tighter.....which does not favor a wide car like a 928..... At the PCA altamont autocross there were some crazy tight sections where you really had to get hard on the wheel (think of an old school sailing ship where you just throw the wheel until it locks over).....the course at the fairgrounds will probably be tighter! I'm going anyway....just for fun
