Default Fuel rail sponge

Does the sponge serve any purpose, or can I lose it?

PS ... you've already lost it , by the looks of the pic.

The 1/2" pipe insulation Malcolm shows will do very well! - two 3' lengths for $1 here.

This stuff was eliminated somewhere in the 90s. If you buy replacement rail covers now, you get ones with heavy foam molded in, although it does not insulate the underside. I've done the pipe insulation mod.

The replacement covers are not that expensive.

Bill - did you install in situ or with the rails off?

Nifty. I was wandering arounbd in Home Despot today and noticed they carried a foam panel insulation adhesive. That might save some detail work with zip ties.

Alan: You should be able to do it in situ.

Does anyone know what effect this insulation has on fuel temp? With/without? Fuel is constantly recirculated back to the fuel tank, right?

Also, isn't there a fuel line cooler/heater thingy at the firewall? What does that device do?

Would it be helpful to insulated the fuel rails on an '85?

Thanks

I suspect that the purpose was noise insulation, rather than heat insulation.

I would leave it as is. One less thing to get soaked in gas and catch on fire.
