Unfortunately a couple months ago I had my second rod bearing failure at Thunderhill. This is what the oil filter & oil look like when things go bad:

So with the help of a couple skilled and motivated friends, we were able to pull the motor from my car on Saturday.

There's absolutely no way I could have attempted to do this on my own. My skills as a mechanic are limited to brake bleeding and oil changing. So I can't thank Bill & Jim enough for their time, enthusiasm, expertise and driveway space in order to make this possible. I learned so much doing this. I'd always heard headers are a bitch to install/remove and I had a chance to experience it firsthand. We did end up pulling the wiring harness out w/ the engine as that seemed like the easier solution.

After pulling the oil pan and taking a quick peek, it looks like I'll be needing at least a couple S4 pistons, rods, crank(?), etc. If anyone has bottom end parts available, let me know.

I'll be posting more pics as we go forward.

Dude, that sucks. This was your second one? You said rod bearings and not main bearings right? Do you know what's causing your rod bearing issues?

Looking at the pics it looks so simple to pull the engine...which I know isn't true!! Bill is a great asset to the 928 community.....most of us couldn't own 928's without him!

Pulling it the 2nd time around really isn't that bad, except for the fact that it needs to be pulled a 2nd time at all.

The 2 and 6 bearings were essentially gone with just ghost shells left, material filling the oil holes and distributed throughout the lubrication system, locking up the crank too. The rods and crank around 2-6 where burned black. The piston skirt on 2 (or was it 6?) was missing a dime-sized piece and that cylinder was scored badly. Nasty.

I've been told an engine pull is a 16.7 hr ordeal "if you go by the book" shop rate around here is $80 hr.....wow

Nonsense. I'm not a mechanic and I pulled mine (2nd time) in less than 10 hrs. total, including a lot of futzing around in the garage. With a lift and an experienced mechanic, they should have it out even faster.

Parts is better than a running motor. We want to drill the crank and install some other upgraded parts rather than just pop in a stock motor. We hope the heads are good - they should be. As the block is scored, we need a block, rather than fussing with boring it. We don't know about the crank yet, but it's probably better to just get a short block and work from there. There are several ways this could be approached. We're trying to build a good motor but economically.

No kidding. Other than the headers and changing our minds a few times about the best way to deal with the harness, this was not very much work at all. I arrived at 10:30 and we had the motor out by 2 or 2:30. We spent a bit more time getting it on the engine stand, flipping it, removing the pan and surveying the damage. Oh, and we took time for lunch. Maybe the 16.7 hour book time includes lunch, an afternoon nap and leisurely dinner.

This "Book time" issue comes up alot. I replaced the air filter in my wife's MILF-mobile and changed the oil. She picked up the reciept and looked at the 9 dollar price for the air filter and came over to say that the dealership was sending her emails on a sale "100 dollar air filter service," and I asked if it involved the pollen filter and she said nope. She couldn't believe it. I said there is a reason we call them stealerships.

Is this where the term "hotrod" came from?

It may be hard to see in the photo, but the oil hole in the journal is welded shut. Notice the lovely patina on the rod cap and big end. SMOKIN!!!
