In that last pic, it looks like you've got a fella wearin' blue jeans wedged in there next to the crank, too.

It took me a minute to realize it's your fingers w/ blue gloves.

FWIW, we saw the broken piston skirt on #6.

If we go further into this engine, it will be quite interesting to see why the motor is still so stiff, given that the other rod bearings did not look all that bad. I suppose it might be the main the feeds 2/6... we'll see.

Onward !

Dave:

Those are actually my fingers in the blue gloves. After so many years of wrenching, I need the nitrile gloves to have any sort of finger prints left !

This would not have happened if it weren't for Jim Morton. He hosted Dennis's car for several months and now the motor project. I'm spending more time at Jim's place than at home. It's a gearhead's nirvana and Jim is a goldmine of engineering knowledge and experience.

Brian:

From what I hear, I am better described as "Chewbacca"... all in good fun !

From someone new to the 928 community, I too need to bow my hat to Bill. I cannot believe Bill's generosity, all without complaint and with complete reliability. He has made my transition back into the water pumper fold all too easy.

Back on Dennis' front, hopefully folks here will lend him a locate assist with many of the engine parts he needs to make his black track beast run again.

Rennlist...gotta love this place.

With a lift ,air tools, and a good assistant Anderson can have an engine on the stand really fast but he is fast at nearly everything he does ! especially driving

Yes, beautifully said. I can't thank Jim enough. I am extremely fortunate that Jim has taken on this project.

Whoa guys.... this is starting to sound like "Name That Tune", only with 928 tasks. The important thing for this thread is that Dennis' engine is out and we now know what failed and likely why.

It would be most helpful if folks could lend Dennis a hand locating the needed bits and pieces (no pun) to get a 5.0 bottom end together. Anyone have a 5.0 32V short block for sale, or block / pistons, etc. ????

ahh, the old welded shut oil hole.... know it well. Here is a pictue of scot's.

So, when did this happen? did you post that this had happened?
When was the first engine rebuild. I know you had that rear end problem, but i thought the motor was in good shape.

I have a crank with the later, larger oiling holes and a set of rods in good shape for you cheap! howevrer, with S4 pistons you would need to balance it all. Or, just get a short block and you are done.

sorry to hear of the motor failure.

when are you going to be back in action??

mk

ps, what was the oil used?

It may be hard to see in the photo, but the oil hole in the journal is welded shut. Notice the lovely patina on the rod cap and big end. SMOKIN!!!

Thanks for helping Dennis out. It is great that this community pulls together when someone is down. Bill has been awesome in helping out so many.

I cant speak for Bill, but for me, it was important to keep one more 928 running on the track. (and help someone out that would no way be able to afford to have this all done at the shop.) Having done my own 5 liter part euro build up, i took on the task of project manager! Also, it seems, once you know how do this stuff, its kind of fun. Ive personally had Scots engine out 4 times. after doing this 4 times and you dont have all the street stuff on the engine, it gets pretty easy. (even without the lift and proper tools).

Ill tell you, Its a great feeling to see all the work pay off in seeing Scots 928 on the track.

Now, when its time to do the holbert car 6.5 liter conversion, Ill know how to do it! maybe bill can come over and help too!

I'll be there. As long as someone is willing to turn a wrench I'm a willing participant. Dennis has been burned pretty badly by this car with a laundry list of tranny and diff problems, and then rod two bearing failure incidents not long after bearing jobs. He was pretty discouraged and ready to cut his losses. I thought we would lose Dennis to spec Miatas, but he is back and enthusiastically turning wrenches.

We need to locate a short block, although we will keep your parts offers in mind. I have call into Dan Brindle about a short/long block he has.
