Default SCCA ITE race at Thunderhill this weekend 5-25 (RACE REPORT UPDATE)

If anyone is in the area, stop on by.
looks like 90% of the cars are ITE. The monster 550hp camaro will be looking to fight back from his loss at laguna, and thinks Thunderhill will be more of a HP track. I think the ole 928 can still hold him off.

race on saturday AM 8:30, for which ill start at the back of the pack. Then, later that afternoon qualifying for race 2 on Sunday.

Thanks, Mark. Will try to make it on Sunday. Not sure. Good luck, but I know you'll be OK cause you're running Amsoil!

Mark, Good luck out there. Wish I could make it, but I'll be working on my car this weekend.
And Bill, I put 9 quarts of Amsoil in last weekend, does that mean I should be ok this season?

Tell that to the Grand Am cup (koni cup) factory race car with the crate engine!
its heavy, but that car can MOVE! (what do you expect for $120 K though!)

Hey go easy on Mindy (sp ?) he /she is having fun. newly licenced. beautiful car though and it does have some power too. (new mustang )

Thanks Ice- MAN!

Its not hard to make a brand new $120K plus car fast......shoot the new GT3 bone stock laps Laguna at 1:39.51 with a pro driver behind the wheel.....& thats stock...strip out a couple hundred lbs of junk & it will be much faster...but again $120K starting...... Thats what...6 928 track cars?

My car is w/o radiator for the weekend, so I'm homebound. Smoke'm at the race, Mark.

pretty funny that a stock 928 with a set of headers and big tires can run 1:39.0 being 20 years old on junkyard tires.

Default RACE REPORT

What a weekend!

some of the most intense racing ive ever had. ITE had the top 4 cars being at near the same qualifying time. I was overheating due to loss of water in qualifying so I only got 1 lap which was good for 3rd off the Pole. (i really needed to post equal to my race 1 time, to get the pole and have the best chance of fighting off the monster camaro.)

the grid was set:

450rwhp camaro (500 flywheel hp) on the pole (corrected)
430rwhp corvette C5
320rwhp 928
250rwhp S2000 tin box

all times near 2:02

Green flag falls, the camaro evaporates like the Evo used to,(and does the vet), but all seem to stack up at turn 2 and certainly through the twisties. we are bumper to bumper keeping right on the camaro lap after lap, waiting for lapped traffic or a mistake. Finally, i see an opening around the vet near the thunderhill corkscrew, i have room, barely and get buy and try to get some distance and run up on the Camaro. Lapped traffic gives the vet a little more edge down the main straight and passes me into turn 1, i out brake him into 2 on the inside and get the position back. the S2000 gets a break at that point and gets by the vet. Lap traffic gets me in a postition for the S2000 to get by, and the lapped car pushes me off track at 100mph but its straight and i get back on. into turn 14 (next to last turn) i make an inside pass and out brake, but we are two wide going real hot, the S2000 tries to keep his foot in it and go around the outside, but there is no room, my path is determined by turn entrance speed, and we make contact, door to door, he goes by. finally, in the fastest turn 1, i make an inside pass and it sticks. now, back after the camaro. i get a poor line out of the final turn, due to lapped traffic and exit too hot, strattling the birm, which has a highside bump in it, i hear a HUGE thump. "still got oil presure, temp is running hot" keep running. car is running real funny now. feels like the limited slip is gone and im running an open diff. I only have power when pointed straight. barely keeping the S2000 off me. finally make a few attemps to get by the camaro, but cant. the vet gets back by the S2000. So, I end up 2nd, camaro wins his second race of the weekend. i post the my fastest time of the weekend at 2:01.7 while the S2000 actually had a 2:00.9, the camaro was 2:02.3, Vet 2:01.4 getting 4th while the S2000 ends up in 4th.

Now the fun starts, Rylan in the S2000 thinks our contact was my fault, and launches a protest for position. he also says our contact knocks out his rear toe and was unable to compete, however, its funny that his second fastest lap is after the contact! He fights hard in the protest hearing, the officials see the tape and say that it happened exactly as my report has said, and it is backed up with the corner workers report. It really is sad when you have a real racing contact, and someone thinks they are entitled to attach blame. The previous lagua event, Rylan got way over his head into turn 2 and smashed into my buddies black M3 from behind, getting penalized a final position spot for his "at fault contact) and causing a stir among the racers, when Bruce thought he should help pay for some of the damages. (of course rylan said, "thats racing, i aint paying") funny, now our "just racing" incident this weekend, suddenly has to have a fault owner to it, and it certainly cant be his!

bad part of all this, the officials keep the video tape for 10 days in case there is an appeal, where there is a full Court-like process. (these guys take this racing stuff too serious!!) so, when i get the tape back, ill post the race on youtube.

I almost forgot, the reason my limited slip felt like it was failing ,was duiring the birm strattle on the exit of turn 14, the thump i felt was my swaybar mount being ripped off from the frame! so, no front swaybar for the last 4-5 laps, it did make the car feel a little funny, but it was that bad, except for the slipping open-diff like tire spin.

Now, time for some welding and maybe another thunderhill race next month.

sorry for the lengthy report.

Mk

Here is a pic of the minor damage. big rubber donut on the door, and a nice little dent and paint lost on the front fender. I think ill put a white circle sticker over it with the #8 in it, with a line through it!!!!
