Busted power steering pressure line!!!
HINT:
If your 928 is emitting odd amounts of white smoke from under the hood....AFTER you found red light weight fluid on the hood liner......its your PS hoses......knowing that your brake fluid is blue
In my case it was the pressure line that is bad....928-347-447-05 ($195)....I'm sure it will be a PITA to fix....so my thinking is the low pressure return line is much cheaper @ $86.....should I just replace it at the same time to save a future headache later.....
Another thought is to remove the lines and have them "rebuilt" by a hydraulic shop for far less?

Tony's write up is great...but its not the hose that blew on mine!! :>)

Brian. I had a leaky return line on my car. I ended up rigging up a temp fix with some off the shelf hose I got locally. It is a different size on the resivour end and the crimped on end so I had to figure out a way to reduce. Also on my car I couldn't get the hose to make a smooth bend coming off the bottom of the res. It is a molded hose from the factory and I was unable to bend without having a kink in it.

I think my only options are to buy the new hose for $195 or take it off and try to find somewhere to rebuild my existing hose..... I think I will replace the return line too....since it has to be worn too...

I wrapped a large piece of hose over the existing one till I had the chance to replace it. Just hose clamped each end over the connection it was leaking at. My leak was the rubber hose under the res. into the metal tube that goes in front of the radiator. PITA to remove the whole line, radiator has to come out.

I had a local hydraulics shop build mine. Could not even get teh replacement from Porsche. Kept sending the wrong one. It was the line from the power steering pump to the rack. Not a fun job. FWIW, the $500 parts car I just bought had a fire that was a result of ATF hitting the exhaust system.

I got quotes from local shops from $65 & up depending on what needs to be done.....vs $195 for the new one....I dunno..... I guess I should see how much of a PITA it is to take it off 1st.....I was afraid of a fire too...which is why I stopped tracking the car.....worse case scenario it burst and burned on the way home which is an "accident"...then the insurance would pay for sure...vs ??? on the track?

$195 ? I think you mean $214 including State sales tax, plus shipping.
Sunset Porsche price is $140 plus shipping.
Did you ask them about the crushed ring and rubber bumper?

The picture on 928intl shows the bumper...but the copper crush rings are $1.50 each....so with tax and shipping its closer to $225.
I took a look at things today.....getting the bellypan off is a pain on your back (a first for me)......I've been lucky use lifts in the past (thanks Bill).....the bolt to the rack doesn't look that bad BUT it a 19mm wrench barely fits in there and only turns a little bit, but lowering the swaybar should help....
The other bolt on the pump...looks about impossible to remove without dropping the alternator....so this is quickly becoming a major PITA....you can barely even see it.....I couldn't even get a photo of it!!

Here is a money saving idea, for those that did not use the search function. This is for the high pressure line.
The S4 hose is $204 from some venders.
The GTS hose is $99.00 from some.
The GTS hose will work with the 86.5 and above, the routing is different on installation but it will also not have the restrictor in the hose so steering is a bit lighter.
Save yourself $100.00, and smile.

SeaR - That's cool.
Brian - You wanna do it at my place? I'm thinking I should probably replace mine when I do the rack and rebuild the pump rather than have it go at some inopportune time.

I think the duct tape will hold to your house.....otherwise is "Brians an idiot and his 928 burned up thread!"it looks like a major PITA....especially if the engine is hot? But it would be easier than a cold engine on our backs in my garage?
What about replacing the other return hose.....do it or wait?
Sunday?

There are hose repair wraps that are better than duct tape. Why don't you get some of that? Not sure about the return lines. I figure just the high pressure line(s).

I didn't have to touch the alternator when removing the High Pressure hose from the pump. I used a standard 19mm ring spanner. I was too lazy to remove the return line.
I'm having another attempt to refit the rebuilt hose this evening, after the first attempt failed because it didn't fit.

good idea
however, a perminant fix (until another part of the hose goes bad) is cutting the hose, (wraps dont work on the high pressure line) and either two barbs or one barb connector insert and hose clamps if the hole or cut is small.
