Default Insane deal on an S4... how can I pass it up? (LONG)

I am kicking myself for not buying it on the spot... but I found this car online today:

"1987 Porsche 928s4, 180,000 miles, needs work. Damage to rear bumper shocks and left front fender. However the car has a few upgrades, 18" kinesis wheels, momo racing seats and steering wheel, custom Devek level II headers and 3.5"exhaust, borla xr-1 muffler, brembo big red front brakes, bilstein shocks, eibach springs, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, clear title. $3500"

I went to see it this afternoon and the damage is not that bad. Car has been sitting for 2 years, but was SCCA raced, dyno'd at 340 hp at the wheels. The exhaust is cat-less, so not street legal for me. We couldn't start it up because the battery is dead, but the owner says it is insanely loud, and I believe him. The pipe is ENORMOUS, front to back. Clutch has 5k on it; timing belt recently retensioned; ac inoperable; p/s leak; front rotors are cross drilled but probably need to be replaced. No known tranny problems. Owner otherwise seems to have taken very good care of it; he's a nice guy who now races Ducatis instead of 928s.

The wheels are a five spoke kinesis, but nothing they still sell. Not sure what model number. They have a polished chrome lip but not super deep, even on the rears. The spoke is wider than what I think is the K58 now. I don't love them but I certainly like them better than what I have (dinner plates/manholes). They're in good enough shape that I'd ride on them around town but not worry about dinging them. One tire is flat but I happen to have one ready to go on in its stead.

Body: The front accident is from a truck backing into him; it is dinged but easily fixed with a rubber mallet and some touchup paint. The rear has a softball size concave lump from a small car rear ending him; both accidents occured while the car was parked (possible transmission impact?); not sure if it's pop-able or not. The paint back there is chipped, though. The whole car needs a waxing for sure, as it is arrest-me red, but quite faded.

Interior: good carpet, momo seats are very faded but the shells are reusable. The momo wheel is not my taste, but ebay-able, as is the goofy momo shift ****. No stereo, but new speakers. Dash is totally cracked up.

SO, talk me into/out of buying this car. I still have a shot at it if I move quickly. Right now I'm thinking I'll either buy it, swap off everything I want (wheels, brembo brakes, suspension parts, and maybe the momo seats if I can get them recovered) and sell it, probably on eBay or otherwise locally, as a whole car; OR I will part it out completely and keep only what I want (see above).

How tough is it to swap out springs and shocks on a 928S4? (Approx. how many hours labor with air tools and on a lift). Calipers?

If I buy it, should I part it out? Sell it as a whole? Thanks for reading this enormous post and any advice you can provide is welcome.

Bring a battery. If the car starts, buy on the spot with cash, swap parts, and re-sell the car after putting a few fixes to it. If you don't, somone else will.

I'm in Baltimore; this car is in DC. It would need to be towed home; no tags, flat tire.

Is that 340 hp at the wheels accurate? What's the normal hp gain with Level II headers?

He said that's what it put out on the dyno; the exhaust is 3.5" all the way to the back, no cats, borla muffler. Adj. FPR; not sure if he did any chip work; I'm guessing not.

No brainer if it runs....heck, even if it doesn't sounds like a good deal. High miles, but that is reflected in the price. Upgrades make it worth it. Swapping out springs/shocks is easy DIY, one day job.

Level 2 headers + RRFRP + exhaust = 300rwhp or so, which is about 340hp at the crank.

Very cool!

And one of the guys there has a beautiful blue metallic 9-3. That would be a nice upgrade from mine...

It sounds like a bargin.....the parts value alone is far beyond the $3500...tell the guy your scared because it doesn't run......show up with $3K cash....take the title and run.....get it home at start diagnosing it...worst case scenario is the engine is shot.....but everything else could be sold for a profit.....the rims-brakes-bilsteins alone are worth $3K....

You could sell just the upgrades and make a good profit. Cut me a deal on the MOMO wheel.
