shudder when taking off
Just a quick question about my '86 auto. Whenever I start off from a complete stop (at a light or whatever) there's a shudder and the car doesn't seem to want to get up and go. Once I'm rolling (about 5-6 mph) all is fine.
I'm a serious novice. I've searched but can't find anything relating to this (as far as I can tell). I have no idea if this could be due to old motor mounts or a torque tube thing. This is how un/ill/poorly educated I am about 928 issues, but I've been learning quite a bit here on this forum. Thanks!
Thanks in advance for any input.
Dave

Is this a 5 speed car? Clutch maybe?
If it's an auto, I have no idea.

Yeah a shudder could mean many many things.
Bad tranny shudder.
Fuel starvation shudder.
Electrical (fire) starvation.
MAF failing.
Computers failing.
Vaccuum leaks.
Needs a tune up.
Bad gas.
Bad timing.
So many things need more input, more input! (Johnny Five)

If it's a manual and only does it sometimes, I think it just needs more RPMs.
Mine does that starting out if I don't give it enough gas, it's just 'lugging'. Just need to get used to the car and you can learn how not to do it.
If it's an auto, I got nothin'
EDIT: Andrew, I totally didn't see that. Nevermind.

A symptom of incorrect spec ATF fluid may be a shudder.
Has your fluid recently been changed? Probably way down on the list of things to suspect but its something else to check anyway.
Cheers,
Terry

Thanks for all the input. I've recently installed new plugs and wires, changed tranny fluid, replaced vacuum tubes and a couple of other little things. I'll start diagnosing from what you all have suggested beginning with motor mounts. It's just a strange shudder that feels like something is slipping or rumbling. It really only happens right at take off. And I could be mistaken, but it seems to happen more often when I'm beginning in a turn (taking a left or right from a stop).
If I'm still clueless by SITM, it'll be fun to have one more thing to talk about.
Thanks again!
Dave
