Default 996 3 spoke steering wheel on 928 GTS - Picture

My many thanks to Tom in Austin of the 928 list and Greg East of the 944 list for the excellent information they provided on using a later wheel on the earlier air bag cars.
I just completed installing a leather/dk wood 3 spoke wheel and airbag from a 996 twin turbo on my '94 GTS. Only 3 slight modifications needed.
1. Mill about 5 mm from the top of the splined shaft for the nut to fasten correctly (still had slightly more spline length on the new wheel than on the OE).
2. Install a 993/996 clock spring on the steering shaft for horn contact/turn signal lever cancelling.
3. Attach a ground wire to the wheel lug and to a ground wire/bolt in the cabin (GTS wheel was grounded, while 993/996 wheels are not).

The final result is beautiful All leather airbag cover with metal Porsche crest in center, the diameter of the hand gripping area is larger, and the wheel seems about 1" closer to the driver - much like the extra cost option of an extended hub that some 928's were equipped with (have that on my '89 track car).

THANKS again guys, I really appreciated your assistance, and the changed appearance from "behind the wheel".

OK - I'll try to post a picture, but just typing ALMOST exceeds my computer skills!!!

Those of you with sharp eyes MAY notice a few differences other than the steering wheel from the stock '94 GTS. I've replaced the knee bolster with a storage shelf from an '88, I replaced the "T" shifter (was OE wood) with a Volvo wood shifter that I modified significantly - including imbedding a small metal Porsche crest, and since I removed the hatch wiper mechanism, I replaced that switch with a hatch opener switch (OE on 968's). Also, the center arm rest is gone, as that's on its way to Paul Champagne for modification. Oh yes, the plastic shifter surround has also been covered in black leather.

IN case I don't get the pix here, the Rennlist URL is:

Thanks for asking to see the results.

The picture Gary posted really doesn't reflect the craftmanship that went into the mods he describes in his post. You really have to see this car up close and in person. I hope he brings it to SITM in June for all the east coasters to see.
Beautiful, inside and out!

looks pretty nice,
I do have some questions/observations
is that the jager center console/clock setup? if so what are the wiring differences?
was the wheel recovered? (and where the HECK did you get the clock spring?)
I LOVE moving the hatch release to the center, though the 968 switch looks almost new compared to the window switches..
the shifter is sweet, if you come to SITM I hope to get a chance to discuss the mods needed
that's all... sorry to ramble

No, that's factory exclusive wood that Gary refinished. The clock is from a 924S

Looks awesome -- what's that at the top edge of the wheel? Reflections, or chips?
