Default The Gear Oil Filler!!

my great invention.....

- 4ft 3/4" diameter pvc
- 90º pvc elbow
- 2 1/2" pvc piece
- Small funnel

Take the 4ft piece of pvc and heat the end of it over the stove until you can bend it. Attach the 3/4" elbow to the other end. Sand or grind the short 2 1/2" piece to a taper so that it fits in the transmission fill hole and attach it to the elbow. Guide the stick down through the wheel well and snuggly insert the tapered end into the fill hole. Place the funnel into the upper end of the stick. Pour your gear oil with one hand and drink your beer with the other.
It takes about 30 seconds per quart to pour (Redline oil). 4.5 quarts. No mess.

So wait, you don't like to hold it up over your head in that little cavity one quart at a time while it drips on your head and runs down your arm into your armpit?

Man, some people!

Seriously though, that's a cool idea. +1 on the issue of 'what's still in the pipe' when you disco it though.

*smacks forehead* Why didn't I think of THAT?!

Genius! As someone who has changed the gearbox oil at least couple dozen times in the last few years, I wish I had thought of it.

YA, I agree!! AWESOME!! Why not use a piece of clear braided rubber tubing on the end that goes into the housing. you would be able to see if it is full or not. Just a thought. I suggest you make more and sell 'em.

The trans was completely drained and I filled it with the back wheels up on ramps. The tech spec book shows 3.8 liters (4 quarts) for 85 and earlier, and 4.5 liters (4.75 quarts) for 86+. The 4.75 quarts wasn't any problem.

That could be done, but if you are going to pour oil with one hand and drink beer with the other, then the material that goes into the drain hole needs to be hard/stiff enough to help anchor the rest of the stick. The other end sits on the tire.

If you all actually think there is a small demand, I'll research the makings of a better stick.

Any reason why such a device could be made to fill the auto transmission?

Thats another PITA job.

John, nice tool. I remember the last time i did this, I used a hand pump and nearly had my hand fall off. So, I'll be going to Home Depot today at lunch to get the bits build one. Gravity is my friend! Thanks.

This looks like a great idea! Not sure it will work on a 78 with it's huge battery box -- maybe from the passenger side. I'll have to take a look.

I've always snaked a braided rubber hose through the grommet in the battery box and then gravity fed the fluid. I may have to give this new method a try. Thanks for the idea and write-up.
