My black 86.5 was jump started by a PO, blew both computers. An old 86.5 had a bad LH and my 85 5 liter beater needed a new ezf box. It can happen. But just goes to show that a little power in the wrong hands can be lethal.

hey all,

just wanted to give you guys an update. I have tried to seem a little less interested in the porsche, as I had talked to the dealer 3 times in 2 days, and I think they knew I was hooked. the car doesn't seem to be goin anywhere...literally. it hasn't moved from the spot, and the battery is dead. I've gotten an okay from some family regarding storing it, so that will help, as I currently don't have a place to put it. I have been working these past few days, so I have had something else to occupy my mind. kinda hard, though, when I can see the car from my front porch, lol. literally 50 yards or les from me right now. yeah, if it were a woman, I'd be arrested by now for stalking.

thanks pod guy for your awesome advice. I am trying to maintain the attitude that I only want--but don't need--the car, and maybe that will help in the end. they know that I am a physician, so that might not help me. I initially showed up in a t shirt, and the salesman blew me off, but they came running out when I returned later in scrubs.

anyhow, thanks everyone for the advice, and sorry for how sloppy this post is, I'm thumb typing on my pocketpc.

I will keep you all posted, and see you guys in the pitt this summer.

I love this thread! I too like Eclise am in the beginning of working a deal for a shark, and appreciate the advise. Eclise, if you walk away from the deal something tells me there is going to be lots of cashiers checks circling a small used car lot in WV. I say, take someone with you and talk about the OTHER car, you know..the silver one....

OH-NO Mr Bill! That's gonna cost you. Now you should wait at least two weeks and don't go over there. Maybe they'll forget you showed up in scrubs(not impressive as you might think either) and you can make a deal for the car on the spot.

Reading this, Eclise, if you want a 928, go and buy the darn car!! Can anyone on this thread tell me the last time they saw an '86 with such low milage in good condition floating around? At any price?? What, a few a year, spread all over the country. This one is sitting outside the guys apt. balcony for God's sake. How many travel cross country with all that additional time and expense to get such a car that meets their desires. Heck, these cars are more of our passion and hobby than such a pure investment are they not?

Surely they know their $8,700 price is a starting point, they would certainly come off that amount for a cashier's check! I ask anyone to tell him that he'd be getting a bad deal for the car if it checks out needing only minimal items(ie... plan on spending $2k or so for timing belt/water pump & such) & he can get the car for say $7-$8K?? If you get it for less then all the better, but don't screw around & end up losing it for a $1k here or there if this is a good condition car & its one you really want.

I've had to wipe everyone's drool off my monitor several times just to read the posts! As was said, if you do not buy it, I promise you, more than one person on here has already gone on Map Quest & checked the milage distance from their house to that dealer's lot! And if you do not buy it, then to get an '85-86 with 2-3 times the milage and typically still needing some work even if well cared for will cost you at least $5-6k! If you get this one for $5k then great. That is indeed a great post by Dan. Hell, my brother has been in the car biz for 30 yrs & is a wholesaler & I was still taking notes!

But common guys, how many times does it all go the buyers way when you are talking about a 928 like this one? Again, assuming you have a ppi by the dealer & know what it does & doesn't need. Its not all about the Art of the Deal & getting too greedy might lead to regrets if it has something special going for it(assuming the low milage is correct). Decide what range of price you are willing to pay, get it checked out & then go buy the car! If they don't budge on the price & thats more than you are willing to spend, then walk away. Others will follow in your footsteps & you will find another shark. Maybe not right outside your balcony, with low milage, one owner, in good condition and no rub strips, but hey, while your searching for the next one, bidding against 10 others on ebay for one located 1000 miles away from you, you've still got the Lotus to drive yes???

BTW... let your significant other drive the shark, that might help her better understand the car before the ring. Good Luck & keep us posted.

Mel has some valid points. I searched for my 928 for many months. I paid $5600 for what seemed like a good car but in L.A. (500 miles away). A PPI revealed needs of $3500 to put the car "right". I only had photos and the guy's mechanic and my limited experience with 928s. I knew I was taking a chance and might eat a bunch of disappointmet and expense. I flew to L.A. and bought the car and immediately started smiling. On the way back to Northern California, I fixed some of the things on the PPI list in the motel parking lot so I crossed them off of the list of repairs. That list, by the way, is ENDLESS with cars this old. I spent well over the $3500 in the next few months fixing things on my To-Do list. And well over that the next year. And presently, I am looking at $3500 in repairs this year unless I do them myself and then it is $2500. So what? And I have put over 70,000 miles on that car in three and a half years, including three trips across this country and back, and have a permanent grin embedded into my face as a result. I have had the opportunity to own and appreciate one of the finest examples of a Grand Touring car the world has yet produced. I win.

I'll put it the way Mark Thomas put it to me: Think what that car cost new. Think how much it produces in performance, luxury and utility for the cost of operation throughout its life. (hey it is still laying patches of rubber at 190,000 miles, and will probably still do it for another 100,000). Find another car that can do what it can do for the money. And then recognize the privilege you enjoy relative to the poor less informed individuals who never have the unique experience to drive such a machine ....ever. Is it comparable to an Aston Martin or a Ferrari? I don't know. I never drove one. I don't care, becasue I don't want to own one. When you find the right girl, do you want to look around?

Take Mel's advice and buy the car. You'll probably sell your other cars and keep the 928 forever. You'll save your pennies to keep it running. And you'll moan and groan over the cost of repairs because you can't bear to let it be less than optimum. But you will know what only a handful of individuals ever know, and will stop looking at other girls.

Thanks again for all the comments, everyone. I called today and told them 5 grand. I was then told that someone else is looking at it and was quoted 11 thousand instead of 8700. I remembered Don's advice regarding dealers increasing the price. I will keep you all posted. I feel a little down right now. The GF is completely against it, I really have no room for it, and now this...

Calling is a complete waste of time because even if they said YES they have NOT sold the car so they have no reason to say Yes on the phone. Cash in hand is the ONLY way to negotiate ! Here is the money I will take the car NOW ! It is like asking a women to have sex ...on the phone...not much is going to happen even IF she says yes !

If you want the car present yourself in person with the intent to hand over your credit card or cashiers cheque.
Telephone talk is cheap and salesmen(auto salesmen like myself) , never bank on a phone call! When they increased the price and mentioned other interests, it's only to get the original asking price of $8600.( full pop as we refer to it). Get a price in mind and offer a little lower to start. Then negotiate to where you really want to be always ready to walk away! They will not let you walk if your offer is honest, beleive me. While sitting face to face negotiating, be ready to stand and leave the deal, I always ask my buyer to sit again because I know we have a deal, just trying to get a bump(more money).
