This car as described is a tremendous deal. I have seen few better talked about on this board. If you want a 928, then you will not find a better deal. It is a more than fair price.

Walk in and buy it. why the negotiating?

The last sentence may be the voice of reason here, maybe you just have to wait til the time is right. This is a great 1st outing, the next time you will be ready to deal knowledgably. It's always easier from the sidelines.

Thanks all,

I know the phone calls aren't good for bargaining, my problem is work--I am usually at work when the dealership is open. That is why I tried with a call today.

Money isn't really a huge concern. Lacking storage space, issues with the s.o., and not having a Porsche specialist anywhere within 2 hours are issues for me. I can make room, and I'm a little fed up with the GF now. Anyone heard of a shark ending a relationship? I'm getting the same attitude I got tis time last year when I bought the Lotus.

Eclise, you have learned how not to deal on a used car and I have learned who I want to invite to my next poker party. Tell me again how you managed to negotiate the price from $8700 to $11,000?

You are a doctor, you work hard, as you say and we all assume that you get paid well.

Life is about fun, as long as you drive responsibly, why should there be an issue. Let her drive it and maybe she will share in the enjoyment.

Yes I know of a number of relationships/ marriages which ended at least partially because of a 928. Right or wrong there is a tremendous "nesting" instinct which involves gathering twigs, building a nest , and for many 928s are not twigs. Thousands of years of evolution demand that resorces be devoted to the good of the family. The act of giving a valuable "gift" like an engagement ring is confirmation that the prospective mate probably is a good provider. Kingfisher birds present a minnow if it is not large enough the female will not agree until a suitably large minow is offered. So 928s are not twigs or minnows and while you may not live in a community property state where what one earns belongs EQUALLY to husband and wife.....I sense there is a community property state of mind ! Time for a unemotional discussion of what both of your expectations and future roles are percevied to be. More than one single guy with the cool sports car has attracted a mate who EXPECTED that he would "settle down" and become "responsible" when they married. So if you are getting some attitude about how you spend YOUR money ????? what it will be like when it is OUR money. If she is already a "live in " odds are it is already OUR money. Now do you need any 928 parts ? Those I charge for

love it Jim - the doctor is in!!! I say walk in with $7K, and go forit. As I mentoned before, there is a great 928 guy within 2 hrs of you, just down in Bridgeville PA, near little Washington....keep us posted!

I've called and had cars brought to my office. If you say "I have cash at the office" they can come during your lunch break. Arrange to have a notary or whatever you need to satisfy your state's legal requirements there at the same time.

Damn it! I might have an extra space next to my 88s4. Throw the wife out and go to PA. for new red car. Im on it. How do I redeem those Capital One miles.

Think your low ball offer caused them to head the other direction to see if you are serious or not. Especially since they've seen you in your professional attire & assume you can pay their original price. They decided to show you how their profession works. Course they are risking you walking for assuming you are that hot of a buyer that they won't **** you off too. Probably saw that deer in the headlights look in your eyes though as you looked at the car(its ok, we've all been there). You said yourself time is a premium for you. Decide what you want to pay. Then either give them your bottom line or at least get much closer to it. I think any knowledgeable 928er would say $5k is an insult if the car is what it is presented as.

I'll tell you a reference point. Last year I bought my current '85 shark for $7500, the seller was asking $10k. It had less than 71k miles on it and very limited known history. I was able to do my own ppi by having the car in my possession for several hours on a sunday at my house. With minimal known service history, I knew when I bought it that I had to immediately do a timing belt & water pump & tensioner.

So everyone tell him, would he not be in good shape if he pays $7-$8500 for an '86 with 30k miles, one owner, IF he has a ppi by the dealer & there is no major problems(more than $2-3k)?? Again I ask, whens the last time one with such low miles floated along at any price?
