But really- a 2007 WRX STi is a much safer car than our 928s.????????
subaru's are made from tin can thicknes metal, i saw 1 rear ended not so long ago, it wasnt good the guy had to be cut out,The rover montego behind it wasnt bad, My friend has a impreza wrx,and always going on about how light and flimsy the boot lid and doors are.

Body panels are crap for sure but those have hardly anything to do with safety. The crumple zones, the pillars, etc. are pretty much the some of the best for current cars. You can't argue with roughly 20 years newer safety technology. Subarus are always the top rated cars for saftey recently. They've done a good job focusing on it.

You can't compare two cars in one accident either. Front impact vs. Rear impact. Bumpers vs. door panels. etc etc. I've been in an accident where one car was hardly recognizable and the other looked like it had been in a fender bender. There's too many variables.

Yes snow in the UK is a problem, we only get it a few days a year and so no one uses winter tyres. After spending many years in winter snow bound countries and learning to drive and respect the snow and ice on the roads, I can say most people in the UK have no idea how to drive safely in these conditions. So alas 70mph with snow here in the UK is deadly and one can only commend the 928's design for saving his life. A speady recovery to him.

A. A Subaru would look bad even if it didn't barrel-roll down a plateau

B. My father fought in France in WWII and he was specifically told him he could NOT cut any firewood. Stated reason: we'll have to compensate the exiled government of France for any damage to trees. Luckily, he made it out without any trees-- or Germans-- hitting him.

Thanks Guys for the recovery wishes.

The accident was all my fault and purely driving to fast for the conditions, grip felt good in the tracks left by other cars, not sure but think i've hit slush lines from a car crossing back into the inside lanes and it's been enough to lift the wheels off the road onto the snow, the speed at which the conditions worsened caught me out, pure bad judgement and just glad i was alone in the car and never took any other cars off the road with me.

My pelvis is not to bad, minor discomfort and despite being fractured in two places is holding itself together i can bear full weight on my left leg but have to be really careful to keep weight off my right leg to stop the fractures opening, can get about ok on crutches up and downstairs ok, my chest got a good rattling and while no broken ribs the ligaments that hold the ribs in place have been stetched a bit and the lot rattles and clicks about but again no real pain and have to be carefull not to detach any of them completely.

I was knocked out on impact and don't have any clear recollection of what happened after i left the carriage way, once it got to the hard shoulder and i knew i was leaving the road i gripped the steering wheel and pushed my self back into the seat as hard as i could, was still holding the steering wheel when i came to again, had a small cut on my head and a good few nicks on my hands but the broken glass missed my face somehow.

I tried steering out of the slide a few times on the way across the road but no joy.

Already had my daughter take the keys for my 84S2 auto as she caught me getting into it yesterday, off the stong pain killers now and it only really gets me the first half hour in the morning, should all being well be off the crutches in 4 weeks but the ribs will take longer before i can get back to work on the ships, i'm on full pay for 3 months as my company doesn't pay national insurance i don't get statutory sick pay and they have insurance cover if it goes on longer i have a seperate insurance policy that kicks in after 3 months.

I'm afraid few parts will be available from the car as i can use them myself.

tried to post a link to more pics but my post count isn't enough, if someone pm's me i'll send the link to them to post.

cheers Joe, already looking at another GT

Joe,
Any landing you can walk (in your case, hobble) away from is a good landing. Glad to hear you made it through without lose of life or limb. A broken pelvis can be a serious affair, but it sounds like you made out okay in that area too. Don't pusht he recovery too fast. Get heathy first, then you can re-inact the accident.

Congratulations Joe -- on your survival!

Thanks for sharing the additional pics.
I'm thinkin' if you were a 'cat with nine lives', that you could scratch one off you're 'to do' list . . . wow . . .

Yes, count your blessings, learn from the experience. . . and move forward. . .

You certainly give new meaning to the term 'tree-hugger!'
I too, was initially wooed into thinking the 'pasenger side' took the blow... then saw the RHD config steering wheel...yikes!

But in the interim, you might consider a job as an Elton John fill-in . . . at least in looks!

Oh, and, btw, 'non-weight bearing' means just that!

Best,
~doc

Joe, thanks for the additional pics, I was already shocked by the first pictures but now..... Luckey you have a male pelvis and not the broader female type. Take your time for recovery and all the best.

Yup I was driving and walking in three days after I broke mine in two places along with a couple of fractured vertebrae 2 years ago. Getting in and out of the car was a bitch but once in there it was fine.

Glad to hear you are doing OK Joe and no internal injuries.

Best wishes for a GOOD recovery. Don't rush it. Bones don't heal good like 'em teenagers do. Good there's a daughter to keep your recovery on track.

Hey, the car is half way to a convertible conversion. A convertible will need a reinforced sill anyways.

Followed a snowplough in an Audi 5000 years go. Plough turned down a sidestreet and I ended up going too fast and suddenly on 1" -1.5" of virgin powder.
Luckily there's a wide runoff area and guardrail. Was only going 25-30mph but there's not much even a FWD car can do with too much speed. Bounced gently off guardrail.
Didn't even scuff up the plastic front bumper. Freaky.

May you heal in time for some fun 928 spring driving.
