IDEA FOR NEW CENTER CONSOLE

I am not catching the bad design on the vent thing in the respect you guys are speaking of. My only bitch is that directing flow is an issue. There are two vent directionals. The air is firced up and through the top vent for the most part. The lower vent hardly directs flow. A seperaor plate in the rear of the vents would help if it didn't interfere with the flap.
My heat and AC in the GTS works beyond what should be acceptable for human use. The heater gets so freakin hot in a matter of minutes and the AC gets so cold you have to open a window to let warm air back in. Either of these air temps blowing on the human body is downright painful! I had never needed the rear AC even when the temps were 100+ in so Cal. What was the purpose of introducing THAT thing in the car?!?
It will be interesting to see what folks will now come up with as we move closer to this kind of update. I would still like to know if anyone has experimented with another unit that can be swapped in place of what we have by just marrying the harnesses.
Anyone???

Keith,
LA and Portland don't really give you the full test experience here - Try a week or so in Phoenix in June! You may get more picky about airflow to the face. Either that or you need to stop leaning to the right so much...
The taller you are (and therefore the further back you sit) the less this issue would affect you (possibly a factor also). However from your normal seating position can you see all of the vents... if not and the pod is in the way - then the air from that end is getting deflected by the pod - that creates turbulence that then interrupts the air flow from even the vents you can directly see...

Guys,
Been thinking abou this quite a bit the last few days. I decided to take a quick survey of curent vehicles with built-in GPS. What I noticed is that all of them have the NAV screen above teh HVAC controls. (See samples below.)
Base on that, I did a virtual mock up of what it would look like for us. I think I like this arrangement, but now sure if it's possible. Anyone know if there is enough depth behind the HVAC setup, and if you can relocate the main HVAC control lower?

Yes & Yes, see the earlier posted example... However you can't also vertically fit the AC & Central Lock panel also unless you put it in the narrower ashtray area... Or unless you have less than a 2xDIN unit.

Thanks Alan! Then I guess I need to get a spare center trim piece to play with this layout. The bummer is that these trim pieces cost $120+. I was thinking of building a pice out of wood, butit's a pretty complex piece and not easy to sculpt.

Alan let's put ac switch in the middle of the fan **** or just use a different **** there, and move the central lock button elsewhere unimportant. Andrew, let's use the ashtray area for vent (pipe the top vent down to it)

Nicole - well first off the AC on/off should really be on the climate control - no?
Also add a Recirc button (the later cars have it as a slide selector position instead of off). Personally I like the **** for the fan - digital for the rest is OK.
What would you do ?

How good are you at mechanical drawing? If you can give me a design I could have a crack at it, my woodworking skills are somewhat better than my auto working skills .

I think it would be faster and may yield a better result if I were to just use an existing trim piece and mod that. (BTW, I've PMed CaseyH on his offer.) After I get it mocked up and it needs some cleanup, then I would consider doing the final piece in wood or some other medium that lends itself to a factory finish look.

Does the face of the console need to stay flush (i.e. concave)...why not make it convex...like in the photo from the Mazda that Andrew posted..will give more depth to mount deep equipment and may not look that bad. wish I could draw up a pic....
