Here are some of Carl on Day 2 from the same photogapher. Start with the link below and click the next button for 2 more of Carl as he goes through a turn. Click back and forward for other cars. Carl is taking the corner more conservatively than the drift artists in the group.

Default Pikes Peak Update

Hey everybody.

I'm stealing a second at the Hotel computer to get you a little update.

As a Pikes Peak Rookie, I have to qualify in each of the 3 sections before I am allowed to run the race on Saturday. So far, I have qualified at the top miles to the sumit, and today, the bottom-most 4 miles. All good, and I was faster and therefor more competitive on asphalt than on the loose gravel as anyone would expect.

Tommorow (Thursday) I have to knock out the "W's" - 180 degree switchbacks on the side of the mountain between roughly 11,000 and 12,000 feet.

Today we found that, under very hard decel and a right hand turn, the engine would torque enough on the mounts that the headers would tangle with the steering column. Makes steering at a critical part of the turn kind of dicey. But, we just fabricated an engine tie down to keep this from happening tomorrow.

The racer's and their equipement here are so diverse - Pro Trucks from Baja 1000, World Rally Cup racers, factory teams - you-name-it. Volkswagen brought 3 race-prepped Touregs here with factory drivers and they are very fast.

That "Ford Explorer" that is leading my Division so far is a Lexan-bodied, tube-framed, 850 HP NASCAR - type truck with a hell of a Driver. He has raced PPIHC 31 times in his life! (the nearest most frequent driver has raced here 21 times).

Then I come along as a rookie who has never seen this course before... well, when there are 156 turns (many of which look a lot alike) learnbing the course takes years and repeat attempts. Even seasoned Pikes Peak racers I am chuming with talk about getting "lost" on the course.

For example, there are two turns the setup almost the same - the entrance to the corner called the "picnic Grounds" and the entrance to the corner called "Engineers Corner" are almost identical. Four smooth sweeping high-speed rights, then a left. But Picnic Grounds is a opening radius left 90 and Engineer's corner is a descending radius 180 left switchback. Get lost - or get them confused, and your in the trees like one fo the racers was today.

This is such a problem that the Sponsored teams have Loran GPS mounted on
the dash with every turn marked. The 3 factory Touregs have these - so the drivers can never get lost.

If you can't do that, you pack along a co-driver - World rally style, who's job it is to holler corners from the crib notes.

Of course, I have neither of these. So I am doing a lot of looking and studying and instinctive driving. By the end of 4 miles here, I am breathing through my open mouth in my helmet, and drenched with sweat. Its a lot of work!

The crews around us are great - anybody is there to lend you a tool (or a Welder) if you need one. The first guy I met upon arriving was this Dave Mason - he invited us into his Semi-tractor trailer rig for a look around and we hit it off right away. He is a Pike's Peak Rookie like me this year - but you may recogniose his name. Dave has raced the Baja 1000 21 times and won it outright 2 times. An avid S.C.O.R.E. competitor.

He is on as much unfamiliar ground as I - with his soft setup and great suspension travel, he rocks on top in the gravel, but struggles down low on the pavement. There is no one setup for this course!

The field includes the Touregs factory effort that I already mentioned, and AC Cobra's, (3 of them), Firebirds and tube-framed Pontiacs, Trophy Trucks, Dune Buggies, and a Mercedes Benz 1200 ft/lb Twin Turbo semi. They throw everything at this hill.

We have had an amazing reception - many 928 owners or past owners have come up to introduce themselves and have their picture taken with the car - it is very flattering.

I need to get to bed - we are up at 2:30 AM, we pull out of the Sheraton Parking Lot at 3 AM, we have to pass thru the Pikes Peak Gates by 4 AM and be in our pits by 5. Driver's meeting is at 5:15 AM, the track is hot at 5:30. This is the way it has been for 3 days. Friday we get a day off to heal up and Saturday the race starts at 9 AM. I am in the 3rd group going up, so I think I will be green flagged at about 10ish.

Bye for now -

Hey everyone!

Thank you so much for your support and kind words. I have to say that it is an absolute pleasure to be out here in Colorado racing Pikes Peak. I have been watching videos on this race for the last couple months and I have to admit that there is no video that i've seen which portrays just how big this hill is and how intense the racing really is.

The car has been holding together extremely well and is running amazing!

Over the course of this thread there has been mention of how CIS (k-jet) is not good for altitude changes and won't run properly. I would like to clear the air on this subject. I have been tuning this car for a couple months now to get it perfect at 600ft above sea level. As a testement to the ability of this system to adjust properly to altitude this car came out of the trailer at about 6000 ft above sea level in Colorado springs and ran the same A/F ratio as back home. To prove this even futher the car ran the same A/F at the top of the hill at 14,000+ ft above sea level with no adjustments! We are very satisfied and CIS has allowed us to run more consistantly A/F and power wise then quite a few of the competitors (not necessarily our class) including Pro-trucks (carborated) and some of the EFI cars.

Everything is going very well and we look forward to hopefully seeing some of you on race day!

Default Day 3 update

Today I finished qualifying for the Saturday Pikes Peak Hillclimb, by successfully completing the 3rd section. This was the "W's" - a series of swicthbacks halfway up the mountain.

It was taylor-made for a low CG Porsche turning machine with a good dose of V8 grunt in it. Where the Trophy Trucks were 6 to 12 seconds faster than me on gravel on Day 1, I was 20 seconds faster than them on pavement today.
I ended up being only 6 seconds behind Gushi. Ken Gushi is a World Drift Champion and this week he is here driving for the Subaru factory and representing their best effort.

If you are in Colorado Springs this evening - there is a Fan Appreciation night going on downtown at 5 PM and many of the Pikes Peak race cars will be there to google over. We will be there too - I hope you can stop in.

If you can't - rest assured I have some amazing in-car video coming when I get back to WI and can put them up. In the meantime we will try to tease you with a few more good photos.

The race officials seem to like us - as Pike's Peak will continue to be paved a little more each year until it is completely paved by 2010. They told me that they consider cars of our type the "future" of Pike's Peak - as it will start to draw more and more road-racers after its all paved. Pike's Peak is in transition. Even right now, I'd say at least half of it is set up for a road racer like me right now, and about half is that hard-packed gravel the trucks seem to like.

There are 3 AC Cobras racing here too, and they are very fast. They run with sprint car dirt tires on the back, and really make the chunks go flying.

Bill Ball - thank you for posting those links to that photographer. I have not met him yet, but thats some sweet camera he's got.

Here are todays results:
http://www.ppihc.com/contentx.aspx?t...&contentid=257

I only ran 2 times today as I was fast enough to qualify easily and there was no more reason to endanger the car before the race. The car is back in the trailer and we will only change the oil and clean her up before the race - there is no repairs or fixin' to do.

I am glad qualifying is done. We all have run each section so many times for qualifying now that it is the equivelant of racing Pike's Peak to the top 3 times already. The attrition rate is high - the hill is brutal on cars - even today the Hill collected another 4 competitors with big break-downs. Transmission failures, clutches, over heating, head gaskets - many teams have their work cut out for them tonight and tomorrow. I am pleased that we are one of the lucky ones who have survived these 3 arduous days of racing to go on to the Big Race on Saturday.

So, after I had qualified and had not broken anything - we just thought it best to save the car for the main event. Our times in this section spoke for themselves - we have nothing else to gain or prove by risking the car for another trial.

If you look at that link with my times today - you might also enjoy seeing how we faired compared to others not in my Division. Its some pretty interesting stuff.

I would like to finish by saying right now that I know I am not going to win. A Rookie winning Pikes Peak without Co-driver nor GPS is just not reasonable. Sometimes on the videos we can see me craning my neck to try to see whats around the corner... as the risk here of getting it wrong is great. The seasoned drivers that have been here many times before have a huge advantage. But, I can prove we belong, and seem to be doing so.

Here are some photos:

P.S. I am car number 928
