Default Do the cars have different resonators

So much talk on the X pipe no cats, cats ,RMB and so on. Are ther different sized resonators for different years. I have an 87 S4 so what size do I have big or small?

Cliff,

What I hear is the GT has smaller resonators (great sound). I don't know what year but JPTL has a '91GT and he has them and only an RMB. When I'm next to him all I can hear is his car. Some of the S4s may have them also. Michaelathome has them on his car w/RMB and his car sounds great. But I don't know what years have them. I'm sure someone will chime in and let you know.

I think I found the answer, the 87 S4 has the bigger resonators. Reason I asked was with the X pipe no Cats and the RMB word on the list is it will be too loud. I will know soon enough.

My '87 with 928 Specialist X-pipe, cats, and stock muffler has a loud resonance below 2,000 RPM. Would smaller resonators move this resonance up to a higher RPM range?

86.5 and 87 have the same resonators (same part number).

At the moment, my GTS has stock exhaust/resonators 'cept for the RMB. Ever since I changed out to the RMB, the comments/compliments on the exhaust note have been constant! The cabin remains quiet. I will be changing out to an X with hi flo's. I almost don't want to do this for fear of losing the great sound. No matter what, I will keep the GTS resonators in the equation.

I too have heard that the GT's have a different resonator. I think Porsche tuned the exhaust systems for each major change to the engines over the later years.

Added: I just looked them all up in PET from 1986 to 1995 and this is the call out.

928 111 094 01 /R 86
928 111 093 02 /L 86

928 111 094 01 /R 87
928 111 093 01 /L 87
928 111 094 02 /R 88
928 111 094 02 /R 88 M637
928 111 093 03 /L 88
928 111 093 03 /L 88 M637
The above p/n's apply up to 1991

928 111 094 04 /R 92-95
928 111 093 04 /L 92-95

So there seems to be some kind of change

Late year S4's got GT resonators also. They are much smaller than early style.

Anyone have an approximate measurement on the smaller resonators?

Take 2" away from all dimension of large versions or thereabouts.

There it is again! Doesn't matter what it is from tensioners to water pumps to exhaust parts, Garth has got a bunch from different model years neatly arranged in side-by-side photos.
