Wheel Well Foam (Where the heck does it go?)
I've searched the forums and found some posts talking about sealing up the wheel well with expanding foam, but none of the posts actually mentioned how/where to do this. Has anyone done this?
Thanks,
Scott

Not sure that's such a great idea. Your car likely has some differences, but on mine, of the 8 spots that could be filled with foam(front/rear of each well) 7 of those locations have service items tucked away in there. Let's see... clockwise from RF:
Headlight
Washer tank
Fuel Filter/accumulator/tipover valve
2nd Fuel Pump
Power Antenna
Nothing
Cruise Servo
Headlight
Would I want any of those items encased in foam? No. Would I fill the tiny space in the front of my left rear wheelwell with foam? No.

Also, the foam will rub and squeak as the frame/body flexes.(rub 2 pieces of styrofoam together) Im about to start a similar project in my rear wheel well/arches. I wont be using expandable foam. The stuff is messy as well.

Tony, I saw you mention that in the smog thread. Have you considered Dynamat inside, under the quarter panels & seats? Sure, it's heavy, but just snug the SC belt a tad and enjoy the extra traction...

thats what im probably going to use. Anyone have a good source? Im also going to convert our "basic" diswasher to a top of the line quite running one.
Id like to find a good db meter as well.

You might want to check some audiophile sites, you may find recommendations for inexpensive units. There was mention a while back about using a roofing product that is supposed to be equivalent of dynamat and much, much cheaper.

Sure, for certain nether regions that you know you won't need to get to later, it's a quick fix... though were it me, I would have hunted down a rubber plug -- less likely to trap water against the body(or squeak).

Ahh, yes doing foam in between the chassis and fenders is NUTS!!
I would never do that. I was assuming that people were talking about the area INSIDE the car AROUND the wheel well, and that there were some open spaces acting like speakers and carrying road noise into the car.
I was already planning to do sound deading, vibration damping with mats, etc. under the carpets.

The front wheel well covers have foam inserted into the edges of the cover. Is this what you are referring to? I replaced mine, since the strips of foam were missing on them when I bougt the car. Easy to do. The strips are only a couple of inches or so wide about an inch thick. Just wondering...

I think you could do it with the expanding foam if you're smart about it. I have not doen this before, but this is how I would do it.
1. Find a heavy-gage vinyl/plastic that will be your fender liner.
2. Cut and fit to size including mounting points, etc.
3. Drill about 4 holes along the center of the liner the size of the nozzle of the spray foam
4. Using some 6-mil plastic sheet material (e.g. drop cloth) create a "pocket" on the inside of the liner (This keeps the foam from messing everything up on the inside of the liner) and mount the liner.
5. Inject foam through the center line holes.

I think i will just go to a fabric store and get a bunch of pillow stuffing, toss it in some garbage bags and wedge it all up in the Pillar and wheel arch behind the doors. Very scientific ya know!
