Lexus and Jag were more the real world competition for the 928.

I think that the best thing and the worst thing about my 928 is that I see an empty piece of interstate ahead
and all of a sudden I look at the dash and find out that I am going 130 and the damn car feels so good and right.
Also a kickdown anywhere below 30 will spin the rears. Love it!

The 928 is a thoroughbred, not a quarterhorse. It is built with a long stride, to go the distance, and around a curve. But a good thoroughbred also needs to be quick out of the gate.

The first time I drove my 928 it felt very sluggish. The gas pedal felt very heavy and it was actually a little disappointing experience - at first. However, once I got used to the feel of driving the car, it pulls, and pulls, and pulls. If you want to have fun with it, you have to drive it agressively and it seems the car just says, "O.K., I see what you want me to do" and does it. For normal driving, I'm never going to use the 165 top speed but where the car shines in every day use is the 60-80 passing speed, build quality, and what I'm most impressed about - the brakes. It just feels like a safe car when you drive it.

I've been accused of being an "5 speed guy trapped in an auto" but it could not be further from the truth. Yes, I do shift my auto like it is a stick 70% of the time, but that is because I love what 1st gear to 2nd gear does on this car. Granted I spend all my time driving in town, and with the RMB/GT resonators, I have my own personal symphony.
Even compared to todays standards, there is no way I would consider this car pokey and find that most 'stangs/vettes don't want to play around. Which is fine with me, I love to cruise.

Kevin, the point I'm trying to make is that 0-60 was not at the top of the agenda for Porsche for the S4. If it were, it would probably top out in 2nd at 60-ish mph like the cars where that *is* at or near the top of the agenda. What was that ad copy again, "0-100-0 in 9 seconds"?

thats not true. its all about HP for acceleration. or better said, about the shape of the hp curve. both a mustang and a 928, as well as vets and vipes, and EVEN new M3s have very similar hp curves and have very similar effective gear ratios. the nice thing about the 928 is its lock out gate from 1st to 2nd to avoid mis shifts. but, its a more cumbersome gear box than an M3 or z06 vet. however the gears are near the same.
Look at any gear chart. 1st gear to 55mph is pretty standard for most supercars, 2nd to 80 and 3rd to 115mph. the newer 6 speeds can throw in a gear between 80 to 115 so that they have an actual advantage here. but 0-60 is generaly in 1st and a little in 2nd. as we brutally discussed, in a drag race the real low 1st gear will help a launch, but then there is the argument of being able to actually use the lower 1st gear ( like the 3:09:1 rear end change that makes 1st gear redline at 39mph)
all in all, its really about HP to weight. the S4 is a 20 year old car and is really heavy and usually under tire'd. take my car with a bone stock engine with a set of headers and it would probably do 4.5 0-60 and very low 12s in the quarter mile. (same as rons GT with 320rwhp with a set of headers) but mine has been beaten on for over 5 years now!
the competition for a stock street 928 is any 300+hp car over 3400lbs!
(but put on some real rubber first!)

More than a few people that own Porsche's have little or no objectivity about them, and I suppose that is a good thing. We have three cars, 91 Mustang, 99 Continental, and 83 928S, and I can think of things I like better about each of them. Today I was on the freeway cruising along in 5th at 60 mph, traffic slowed a bit, and I saw an opening and dropped my butter smooth T5 into 2nd and floored it. The day I can do that in my 928 I will be a much happier, but much poorer man.
The 928 is a unique automobile, enjoy it for what it is, or have a fantasy, does it really matter?

i do that all the time. if you get near me at 60 and we are racing im in 2nd and it HAULS
Here is a couple clips against 350hp BMWs, 450vipers and 420hp Ferarris.
for some reason, i dont thin you need my opinion to see how the 928 performs at equal or slightly heavier weights.

Here is a couple of dyno runs too! BMW 333 rated, S4 320hp rated, and a MUSTANG near 300rwhp modified with headers, cams , intake, mufflers, etc.
Notice there is no difference in torque provided at the rear wheels with any of the 3 cars over any speed range! keep in mind that the redline for the mustang is 6krpm

Sure HP and torque are tied together via the gear ratio. An S4 and a Cobra Mustang are closer together than my two cars. A lot of feel difference could be the gears too.
My stock 91 behaves a bit different than a typical heads, cam, and intake modified mustang, it has more low end torque, and while it spins to 6250, a reasonable shift point is 5600. Mine also is a 3.08 rear end ratio with a 5 spd, so that shift out of first is around 30 mph.
What the S4 has way over the 16v is more lower end torque, my 83 doesn't take off until 4000+, and doesn't feel at least like its dropping off much on the high end, but I have no idea how accurate the tach is and haven't bumped into a rev limiter yet.
After the holidays I hope to get some Gtech time on both of them, and maybe upload some graphs.

Interesting line the viper was taking in the first video...man talk about late apexes....but maybe thats a good line for that viper? The M3 sure like to cook his front drivers side brake too

So I was wondering what other cars are about equal to a late 928 in performance. Is it as fast as a stock LS1 camaro or vette? Mustang GT?
Just wondering,
Thanks!

The LT1 and LS1 engines are verty clsoe in performace. The LS1 will only pull away starting in 3rd gear, but below that the two are the same. When my 928 was stock, in the 1/4 mile, it was as or even faster than my LT1 Trans Am. Thre is way too much credit given to the LT1 casue or perhaps not enough to the 928. The two cars are very similar in straight line performace.
