Default Slipping by without front plates

I live in California, and the PO sealed the whole front bumper, you can't even tell where any mounting holes might have been, and I got my plate(s) today. Envelope says;

California's law for displaying License Plates.
All license plates must be displayed on the vehicle for which they were issued.

When two license plates are issued, one must be attached to the front and the other one to the back of the vehicle.

When one license plate is issued, it must be attached the back of the vehicle (ie trailers).

*** my plan, find a place to keep the second license in the car, and play dumb if I get stopped. I can't just give one plate back can I?

I know a Rennlister in SoCal driving a black EuroS with no plates (or exhaust).

On an OB - mount the front plate behind the grill down below. Down the highway the cops will be able to see it - up close, not so much.

Jeez, I don't have any idea where my front plate is. I haven't had one on my daily drivers for upwards of 15 years, and despite many encounter with the authorities, the subject has never come up.

I keep the front plate under the passenger floor mat. There are 2 small holes in the front bumper cover, but no front license plate bracket came with the car.
(Do they make bumper plugs for sharks?)

Strangely enough, if you look at page 202 of the '87-'91 PET, the license plate bracket is #24, but there is no P/N listed for it. 928SP lists one as 928.701.050.04, $26.

I haven't used a front plate on my last 15 cars. The last time I was hassled about one was 20 years ago when I royally pissed off a cop and he wrote me for about 12 chicken$hit violations on a lease car I was about to turn in. Things like a missing lugnut. I turned in the car, took the paperwork to court, and the judge dismissed the whole thing. He seemed genuinely embarrased that the officer had obviously used the color of his authority to get personnel.

I've been nailed twice on different cars. So I guess it's a local thing. Just don't come through Santa Barbara.

I've heard some say they keep the plate in the car, and use the excuse that the bracket is "on order from Germany". I have the plate in the top of my toolbox at home, but I keep the excuse handy. Like Bill, I haven't had an issue.

Thanks, I won't worry about it, and just stash it under a mat or seat.

No front plate on my car and so far no hassles. My front plate bracket attaches under the front lip of the bumper. No need to drill holes in it if you have to put it on for a fix it ticket.

Sharkskin,

I use the same excuse about the plate holder being on order. I actually tried ordering it at my local Porsche dealer 12 years ago. The parts guy wrote up the order, but I didn't have the right type of credit card, so he couldn't order it. He gave me the order form so when I came back to order the holder, he didn't have to write it up again. I scanned the order form and have been modifying the dates for the last 12 years...in case I got pulled over. I also keep the extra plate behind the driver's seat with the Porsche order form.

Does it work?....well, it sort of. I got pulled over for speeding (68 in a 65). Got a ticket for speeding, but I got a warning about the plate.

Here's another thing...I live in Illinois. 99% of the corvettes (C5 and newer) do not display the front plate. Is the same thing happening in Cali?

In spite of my front plate being installed, I get plenty of compliments. Most people just don't notice.

Don't worry about it......"if" you get a ticket....just use some double sided tape to tape your plate to the bumper (about where it went) right when you get to the cop shop.....have a cop sign it off....drive away around the corner and remove it! easy! I haven't had front plates on any of my cars for 17 years (except the buckets I don't care about)......not once have I had a plate ticket, even before I was a cop! Actually in all the times I've been pulled over in no front plate cars.....(think many many times) no cop ever mentioned it???? Maybe I'm just lucky?

Roger

I would say a large percentage of the cars here in Socal don't have front plates.
