Default Leaking CV boot????

Since I got the new wheels, with their open design, I have noticed a slight grease like dripping on the very inside of rim, near the hub.

So I jacked the car up this morning and this is what I found??? I'm thinking it needs a new boot....then I might as well replace both of them?? Since the drivers side was rebuilt 9K miles ago??

That happened to me - cv boot leaking but not torn. Clamp not tight enough and grease being slung out. I replaced the clamp with a stainless steel "BandIt" clamp - no more problems. You may not have to remove the axle to replace the clamp.

Strange, but I was cleaning under the back of mine yesterday and saw a similar thing on the inside boot. I could not find any tears either.. Good info Steve.

Brian:

Considering how clean the topside of your car is, you should be ashamed of those photos of the underside.

yea yea yea.....heard this one before :>)

One day when I have a lift I will get the underside freakishly (like Chuck) clean....but until then anything under the car (other than wheel wells) will have to remain in its current state!!

Hmm just get a tighter clamp on the boot..that might be the quick and easy solution?

You might want to clean it up, maybe with WD-40, and take a good look. If the existing clamp was overtightened it could have caused the boot to split. If that's the case, then once you get the clamp off you're committed to doing the whole job of replacing the boot. OTOH if you do find a tiny split in the boot, you can probably still drive around for a couple of weeks until you're ready to fix it right

(or you could, if it wasn't raining)

Dave
Its been leaking since at least june....probably longer, since my old wheels where pretty dirty on the inside! But its only a couple little drops at a time....I cleaned it up and we'll see if the drips slow down? Either way I am leaning towards"

1: New CV boots-rebuild for both (since drivers side was done already)
2: An entire rebuilt axle (just to save time over the CV's), but I don't think there is anything wrong with my exsisting axle?

I would try to clamp it first, (if you can get a clamp on there, may not be enough room.) Clean it all off like Dave said, clamp and monitor it for a while. Otherwise, schedule a day in your garage to remove, clean, and re-assemble everything. Get Gerry to help, doesn't he have to tackle the same job with his OB? Be sure to have lots of rubber gloves, throw-away rags and paper towels....that job is messy like a baby diaper.

A new clamp couldn't hurt.....I already cleaned off the "big" grease & we'll see how it holds up over the next couple weeks (but I don't plan on driving all that much).....Gerry already did the axles in his OB, but he went with pre assembled used units, so it wasn't as hard!

You have to remove the axle to get to the wheel bearing....but that doesn't crack open the CV boot either!

Rich: Messy babie diapers are just ONE of the reasons Brian and I do not have kids. That and the fact that Brian would be in prison for what he would do to a kid for even unauthorized touching of his 928 !

Gerry, I don't have any kids either. In fact, I'm pretty sure I can make it to the end of my life without ever changing a diaper. I have, however, changed 928 axles. Just as messy, but without the smell or crying.

My pax side boot is the same way right now...seeping a little grease but no tear. Needs a new clamp.

I'd say just do the boots. If you can wiggle the halfshaft around without jacking the car(ramps, curb, or maybe you can wiggle under there) see how tight it feels. Do this with the trans in neutral and take whatever steps are needed to make sure it doesn't roll over you. If you jack the car the CVs won't be in their normal wear spot.

The halfshaft should move laterally quite a bit, close to an inch on the early halfshafts and somewhat less on yours. As you move the halfshaft laterally toward and away from the transmission, try rotating the trans output shaft to see how much play there is in the joints themselves. Most likely, you will find that there is very little play at one spot along the lateral movement range and they are tight otherwise. If that's the case fresh boots & grease will be all you need. (also gloves, towels, diapers, etc.)

Its a contest......even with my many "rentals" (I also refer to them as birth control) nieces and nephews...I have never ever changed a diaper.....almost did once (when I was drunk).....but once that bad boy was cracked open....I about puked!! :>)

I'll have to do some more testing to see whats needed....I'm thinking boots should be enough (+its cheap)

Update!!!
While cleaning my wheels today I took a really good look at the boot....its intact with no tears or rips....only a steady seeping from under the clamp...I'm thinking a new clamp should do it! How hard would it be to get a new clamp on it? Heres some pics
