Default Firewall with the clutch master cylinder mount ? Auto to manual conversion.

Hey guys,

Can anyone help me confirm that my '85 has the extra sheet metal on the firewall for the clutch master cylinder mount?

I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I was told (by Jim at 928 Inter'l - thanks Jim!) to look on the firewall by the pedal assembly, to look under the carpeting.

Well, doing a quick look, I see there is some thick plastic covering in the area, and I didn't want to start ripping things up, so just took a few quick pics and thought I would seek advice.

Do I need to remove that black plastic covering to see what's underneath, or can you guys tell from these pics?

This is what the manual shows, so it looks like I have the whole in the plastic cover at least:

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed I'll check My 86 tomorrow and post it's an auto I rebuilt my 79 clutch master cyl last year so I'll look for anything else that might cause a problem the rubber mat looks like it has a knock out to allow for the clutch master cyl. I can take some pics of my 79 for reference tomorrow. for some reason rennlist isn't letting me post pics so I will probably need to send them directly to you.

Nice Info I'll check my 86 just incase they are right hand drive in Australia so things might be different but there isn't much room to work down there and I removed my power brake booster to get my clutch master out. Found out they used copper bake lines when some of the black paint came off the line when I was replacing the brake master cyl.

PS hey dave there making a 240 Z hot wheel this year bought one for myself there much easeir to keep when there that size I know they made a Z back it the day but it was a 260z

Excellent! Thank you! You da man!

Here's a pic of the extra bracket that I need to look for:

Here's a pic of the bracket itself:

Very cool. I'll get on this this weekend when I have a little more time to figure out how to peel that mat back without trashing it. -Ed

Thanks!

And hey, I'm a Z car fan too. As a matter of fact, I sold my '70 240 Z and bought a 944, which I had for a few months and then sold to get my 928!

My '70 240Z:

I'll have to get one of those Hot Wheels!

I had all the sound deadening material in there as well, though I didnt have the bracket on my 81 euro chassis. so I would rip that sound deadening material out of there and look behind it for the bracket.

I liked the 70 z because it didn't have those side vents I don't know how the hatches held up though in the harsher climates.

Hi Ed,

I am in the middle of this conversion on my 1986.5 U.S. spec car. I did not have the required sheet metal needed for the master. By the pictures you took it looks like the rubber covering is formed correctly for the needed sheet metal to be there but it could just be formed in the rubber material without the part being there. The best way to confirm is to carefully peel back the rubber covering and look for the sheetmetal bump out with the same hole in it as the rubber covering. It will look just like the part shown in the picture you posted form Portia's Parts website.

A word of caution, the 85-86 uses a different flywheel than other 928s. It's the 100 tooth flywheel. Also this conversion, although not that difficult, is not for the faint of heart. By the time you round up all the parts needed and install everything you will be into it for a lot of $$$. I did the conversion since this is my track car that had a lot of work already done to it, rollcage, stripped and painted interior, suspension upgrades, etc.

If I were in your shoes I would buy a nice 5 speed, sell your car and enjoy yourself with the new to you purchase. There are a lot of 5 speeds out there and I'm sure you can find one that you will like as much as your present ride. You will save yourself a lot of time and $$$. You will also have fun shark hunting.

Just my two cents worth,
Constantine

My 85 did NOT have the extra sheetmetal for the master cyl.. I got the piece from 928 Int'l. I separated it from the piece of firewall it was welded to and used the that for a template to cut my own firewall, then bonded/ riveted the mount piece in. That was about 7 years ago, and its working fine...
Constantine is right, it would be easier to swap cars than drivelines, but if your particular car is important to you, go for it!

Ed,

I know, where were all these naysayers when you were looking for opinions on whether or not to swap. Now that you're into it, don't look back. You know the rest of your car is good, so go for it.

I've got an '85 5speed, and if you need pix or anything else, PM me and I'll see what I can do. My car is pretty much bone stock, so there shouldn't be any surprises. (Just don't ask to see the interior, it's 'on the list' ).

Now that you've started, the only way out is straight through!!!

Also, I don't know how Z cars got into this, but I had a '77 280z that I thought I would never replace as my favorite car... until I got my 928 a few months ago.

I wouldn't tear up the sound deadening material -- you should be able to get up in there with a mirror and a flashlight and see what you need to see.

For the Z fans -- here's a pic of the cars belonging to the guys who were putting together that "Skylady" monster, and another pic of the Skylady... Mike, I think it came up because I mention them in a couple places on my site. I just sold my Franken-Z back in June.

Dave,

That's cool. My dad had a '65? Fairlady convertible.

I saw one in milk crates for sale on eBay a few months ago and was going to get it for him to work on in his retirement, but I'm glad I didn't. I don't know if it would have been a blessing or a curse. (aren't they all a little of each?)

Ed, sorry for the continuing hijack on this one.

Ah you mean the roadster -- well, this is a Fairlady Z(not really, but that's the Japanese badging) with s Skyline TT motor -- thus "SkyLady".

Sorry bout the hijack too...

I am sorry I am responsible I knew a couple guy's had the Z cars so I just wanted to let them know that a cheep one was available that wouldn't disrupt neighbors and marriages. I use to work on the old roadsters they were called fairladys until 1969 when the Z was introduced for 70 and stole there name and ended there production . I would buy a 2000 or maybe an earlyer car with the lower windshield if I were going to convert it to a new powerplant and bakes there was a nice article i read of a Black one that was totaly modernized.
