Finally got my top end done! The car is running GREAT!

I've missed my car this month so as soon as I got it back together I took it out for a little run.

Next week we hit the dyno!!!

Nice! Glad to see you got her back together and you did a great job of making the bay look sharp!

Here's my 89 underhood shot from October 2000 at 72K miles, the day I bought it versus 5 minutes ago at 192K miles. Zero refurb. Different camera accounts for colorshift. [EDIT: Oh, the fan shroud change was done to work with a DEVEK fan kit. I used an 85-6 upper shroud to provide the intake scoops you lose when you use aftermarket fans. I did the fan change primarily to get more working room at the front of the motor. And the supercharger kit I installed in 2005 has been off since just before my last smog check. Still planning its re-installation.]

Some great looking engine bays!

Bill,

What's the secret to keeping the paint on intake looking good? Do you wax, clean or use anything in particular? Do you pop the hood after a drive to help cool the engine?

Yes, I do pop the hood when I get home. There is a LOT of heat trapped under the closed hood once the car has stopped running, and I believe ventilating it preserves the rubber and plastic. Other than a fractured crank sensor connector, everything around and under the manifold is still pretty fresh. Other than that, every couple of years, I just rinse off the engine compartment with a mild stream of water and wipe off grimie spots with a rag. I've seen cars with 1/2 the miles where the manifold paint is largely flaked off and the rest is ready to fall off. I don't know why. Mine was intact when I got the car, and other than raising the hood at home, I haven't done anything else to preserve it.
