Default Custom intake in progress (need input)

I am almost done with the finished touched on the "CAI". I have been puzzling with the idea of getting some sort of CAI on the Porsche without cutting anything. With this design I will need to cut the stock radiator shroud but that's it! It sits between the radiator and the hood and the air is drawn from the front of the engine compartment. I need input on the design and improvements!

I am thinking on holding the stock filter with some nuts and bolts? Any other ideas?

I was amazed with the weight on the CAI which should be less than 5 pounds.

Thanks,

I'm kind of confused on what you're trying to do, it doesn't look like your going to gain any performance out of this...

I'd make it out of styrofoam, then cover it with carbonfiber/aramid/fiberglass and disolve the styrofoam out of the inside. That should make it nice and light. Make a small frame with a lip that goes around the filter, then mount that to the intake.

Blown beast has a similar intake I think. You might want to look for pics of it.

Most of the cold air intake pressure would be at the base of the windshield (seond only to the nose of the car, but a close second place) venting the box as we have found, create some extra hp. the other thing we found interesting is that the air box is actually designed for a good flow pattern. that in itself creates more mass flow through the intake. the porsche 928 air box, is probably as good as it gets as far as intake pressure drops, and thats what gives you the HP. all you need is some turbulence in the intake tubes leading to the air box, and you negate any gains you think you may have created.

hard to see what you are really doing there, but I understand the goal.

You might want to make sure you seal up around it so you don't have air leaking in past the radiator.

Currently I have a cone filter sucking hot air from the engine compartment on the supercharged 928. I wanted to use the stock air box but there is not space left under the hood.

What I'm getting at is that if you remove the top of the fan shroud you will relieve air pressure on the front of the radiator, reducing cooling efficiency. If you don't seal up around this housing you're making, the same thing will happen to some degree.

Gio:

This looks great. As you mentioned, one issue is retaining the filter. You seem to be good at fabrication. I would vote for a full frame that fastens down over the filter outer edge surround. Studs in the box would work behind the filter to fasten the frame, but there is no place in front of the filter. That would have to be done with some sort of C -hook fastened to the front lip of the box that could pivoted over the frame. Get the idea?

If you ever decide to go into production, I will buy one from you!

Dave, I will be adding a wing on each side so I will bolt on the remaining shroud and sealing that area.

Bill, Woody did a great job in making the template. I will be checking into making it out of steel unless I can get some other cost effective way producing it (ebay has some good deals on fiber mats). That sucker took about 24 sq ft of fiberglass cloth and 3/4 gallon of resin. But its "build to last", lol. I will keep you posted.

Gio,
Great! I would be interested in one of these also.
I have everything needed for the fender CAI but have not been able to convince myself to cut the hole.

I get it, you cant use the stock air box, due to supercharger. this then looks attractive!

Kens frame and similar to stock strap system would seem to be very good here. Are you thinking to have the whole air box hinge up to do filter changes?

You'll also end up a with a gravity self cleaning filter system too! - all the big crap on the filter falls down to onto the lower front spash shield every time you shutdown - perfect!

Is the size of the top box the max that will fit at the front? - it looke like it may be a bit restricted at the nose end for even flow across all of the filter element?? - how does it compare to the stock airbox bottom collector space below the filter?

Wouldn't it make sense to also fabricate an elbow directly into the feed tube (or is it done like this for pivoting at the tube attach?)

Very nice idea..

Do you guys know where I can get some flexible intake hoses that are 3.5" wide or one with a 90 degree turn? Autozone has a flexible one but its 3" wide.

Bill, I will call you up after I get mine setup. I can sent you one at cost as long as you are willing to do a before/after dyno and post the results :-)
