In hindsight, the we should have stayed with a simple scat crank and used 968pistons that would been fine for the application (ie near 400rwhp goal and 6400rpm max revs) . Since Tim had already bought parts for the design, i paid $1400 for the nickelsil'ing of the block, so there was no turning back .

then we couldnt have helped out tim with the motor sale that started it all.
But yes, that would have been the easy way out, even if new 968 pistons had to be purchased. as stock porsche rods and a scat crank could have been used.
(from how i understand it) hey, ive only put together stock motors, dont know much about this stroker stuff )

I'll let Tim add any details about the motor him and Mark have been working on. I can only talk about the pledge drive.
In some thread a long time ago, someone mentioned raising money to buy Tim's motor for Mark. I talked to that person about starting a thread on the topic; he said "go ahead!!!" So I did.
Short while later a "goal" meter popped up we all started to follow - funds were raised, we had a good time...........hit the goal when we realized the goal was short of the actual selling price of the motor ($7,500....for a $10,000 motor)
Since the specific details of the final motor were up in the air at that point, it was decided to let it go and move forward with the build, Mark would assume any additional costs as part of his racing budget.
Any details since were between Mark and Tim since I'm not an engine expert (even thought I play one on TV) I had nothing to offer the design team.
Let it be said the pledge drive was started and took off before Mark or Tim even knew about it. This doesn't really change anything, just needs to be mentioned.
So to summarize, even if Mark had taken the motor as is - offered to the list by Tim a few years ago, we were still short a few thousand dollars Mark would have to come up with on his own. Fact is the motor Tim was selling was designed form the ground up for boost. Mark and Tim have been working on a setup using the original motor, with a better setup suited for Mark’s type of racing.
I've been meaning to get over to Tim's and take pictures of the block, parts etc... and start a new thread. Long story short I haven't gotten over there since the block was delivered.

Far better to get it right, than to install something that might fall short of what Mark will need to stay competitive. I think this season has proven to be a tough one for Mark, as the competition has notched it up a bit....supercharged S2000, etc. So, if Tim can supply Mark with an engine to keep him at the front of the pack, and additional time and $$$ was spent to get it right, I completely understand.

yes, its too bad. I guess especially I got all caught up in the hype of the new motor. when reality sunk in about what we really need to make the holbert competitve, the original motor fell short. Hey, if we can make this happen, we all will win. The list will have a sponsored 928 flagship, tim will be able to sell parts of the engine that wasnt going to be used, I have the honor or driving a 928 equiped with the coveted 6.5 liter built buy the famed, Tim and Todd show.
This season has been tough. the consistancy of the car and some good luck has us in the championship points lead as we sit today. If the car performs as it has over the past 6 years, over the next weekend, we should win one of the most competitive sports car divisions in the SCCA. no mater what happens, its not too bad for a 20 year old car with used tires and a set of headers!
next year, we will see where else we can play with the new powerplant.
