Default windshield cost

My '85 has a windshield with the antennae in it. I removed the rear quarter windows and found that they seemed to be able to take a lot unequal pressure. Stupid me. I figured the windshield would come out just as easily. Now I need a new windshield. Any idea how much these things run?

Price and availability vary widely from one source to another. It is very, very rare to find the factory glass from anywhere but Porsche, and then it is about $1K unless you know somebody. Some glass vendors find antenna-in-glass; others can't. Lately there has been an invasion of cheap Chinese glass into the aftermarket glass market, and the quality is seriously inferior (very wavy). In your hunt for glass, you will be lucky to find a vendor that knows what they are talking about. Some will say they can get Sigla for $450 only to report back in a couple of weeks that they were wrong, sorry. Start calling the local glass installers and get ready for a lot of misinformation. I did find one shop that actually had nice Pilkington glass in-stock for my 89 a couple of years back, although this year they could only get Chinese. I'm not anti-Chinese, it just happens they are underpricing the market with some inferior glass at the moment, and the installers are falling for it to boost their profits. So, be sure to quiz the installer about the glass manufacturer. I like Pilkington. Expect $250 range, but prices are all over the map, and antenna-in-glass could be a problem. Maybe 928 Intl has a used antenna-in-glass windshield.

I hear things like this occasionally, but I cannot duplicate it in Northern California.

Default Windshield replacement

What Bill said -

I got mine from 928 intl. Be sure the installer uses the correct tools to remove the rail around the edge and not some monkey that uses a flathead screwdriver to remove them.

I just recently got a Pilkington (South Africa) with antenna. Cost about $500.00. You don't want the soft Chinese glass.

10 years ago, a rock hit my windshield with such force that there were glass splinters on the dash. It hit right above the driver's side wiper.

Brought my car to a very good body shop to fix the windshield (and other things...different story) and was told by the owner that if I had the type of windshield used on lesser vehicles (cheaper), that the rock would have probably gone through the windshield.

In addition, he said that using cheaper glass may hurt the resale value of the car because the buyer (or dealer) may notice that it wasn't the factory brand.

If I remember correctly, the correct windshield (with antenna) was around $900...thanks State Farm!!

I wanted to get some inexpensive good glass for my car, but couldn't find any (apparently they
changed the windshield in 1990), so got "Porsche" glass order from a dealership. It was around
$1295. I was glad it was covered by insurance...

I bought one from Pro Source and installed it with the help of some local listers. Got a green tinted, antenna in glass, Safevue brand.

ProSource Glass International
Andover, MA 01810
Tel:877-345-2800

Price was $555.75 - delivered to a local business address
(Glass: 375, Crating: 25.00, Shipping: 135.75)

A PacNW lister recommended them. They do ebay auctions, but I just called them up and asked if they could get me the windshield at the same price as they got my buddies, they said no problem. They were very easy to deal with. The glass arrived fine and it looks good. I recommend them. Ask for Richard.
