IIRC (its been a while now) I replaced the bushings and springs in my shifter when I installed the short shifter, and it is in 2-3 in neutral.

The fuel consumption guage measures L/100km not MPG so the scale is effectively reversed. You want to burn the smallest volume (L) per unit distance (km) vs the American way of thinking of going the greatest distance (mi) per unit of fuel (g).
The shifter discussion has come up several times before. Vilhuer posted that it changed in 85 IIRC. The 80-81 tranny in my car centers between 2-3. Most seem to center between 4-5. Centering between 4-5 makes finding 2 or 3 very annoying. The question is whether most or broken or some have been 'fixed'.

Shifter is not normal... mine is the opposite, sits in the R-1 plane for Helmut, and Griselda is so sloppy it is hard to tell what plane you are in and will sit pretty much where-ever you leave it.

so far as I know the early 5 speeds sprang to the right but the 86 and later spring to the 2/3.
I put a GT box in my 81 s and it took a surprising long time for me to get used to the different springing.
Having said that, the GT box is a major improvement - now I can select any gear when I want without any crunching noises; I can even change to first gear if I want & any time I want.

My '83 Euro shifter sits in the 2/3 plane & shifts very nicely (though not the butter smoothe shifts my previous S4 had).
As to the fuel consumption gauge - mine is usually pretty well pegged right unless I'm at a stop

Me thinks there must be a bunch of broken, detached or incorrectly installed springs out there...? anyone find this issue & fix it? Where are these springs anyway - in the transmission or outside?
I can't fathom why a default 4/5 positions would make any sense? can you?
And if a 78 is in the middle why did it change...

the springs are on the inside of the transmission. i've taken it apart and a friend and i initially thought the same thing that something must be wrong if it sits in the 4/5 plane. if you install the springs like the shop manual shows, the shift lever will spring to the 4/5. if you leave out the one spring, or it slips of the rolled pin, the shifter will be loose and it will flop around the 2/3 and 4/5 plane unless something exterior to the transmission is causing it to sit in the 2/3 position.

OK. Im NOT saying it's "right"! If you wanna know whats right, talk to Flyindog!! He is the builder of this shark!
Here is a photo of KIKN928 (BeerFish's) interior. Id say 4->5. BUT! The Kraouts (who know the BEST way to build a car) say its 2->3. Flyindog should correct this in a few hours, he is THE ONE to ask!!
See attached. I like it THIS way. But Im sure someone will say that its my gears, or my ratio, or that its one of those "euros", or that its the weight. Same old thing!!!!
Sorry for the pic being so dark, I just wanted to chime in, and with the storm comin, just thought Id help a little.
