My first outing with the Euro... Questions.
well, I am home, and have spent the last two days running all over NH an MA in the 82 euro S... and I only have a couple questions... first, the gauge under the tach, what is it? looks like some sort of fuel economy gauge, but I cant figure out how to read it. second, on 5 spds like mine, when the shifter is in neutral, is there a strong spring pressure pushing the shifter to the right? mine does, and I want to know if its normal, or if it is missing a spring on the other side to counter it... or perhaps the spring on the other side is soft. well, let me know what you know, and TIA... I will post some pics soon folks.

The guage is a Euro fuel abuse guage!!!! It reports your miles per gallon usage. At a stand still it reports high MPG. All the rest of the time, if you drive like me, its pinned in the other direction!!! HA!
The shift lever should be pushing. Im not sure the cause but be glad yours works, it will help to save your synchros (see my signature) and make it easier to shift through the regular touring gears.
Sounds like a nice car, post them there pics!!!

beerfish... k, questions to your answers...
fuel abuse gauge? lol. thats what I figured it was, but it seems to be reading counter intuitive to what it should be... when I am sitting at an idle, its someplace. to the left, hanging out in the low numbers, when I am on the gas, it goes all the way to the right, in the high numbers, but the seems to be no middle ground.
and, about the shifer... so, a normal, very firm, pull to the right (higher gears) is normal for the shifter while in nuetral?

Tim,
There are two sets of marks one for when you are running MPG (KPG) and the other for when the car is at idle. So its a dual reading guage and sounds like it works well.

What?
A 5 speed shifter should be sprung to the middle position when in neutral. It should rest in the 2/3 plane (vertical).
There should be a strong spring pressure to engage to the the left for the R/1 plane and a weak spring pressure to engage to the right for the 4/5 plane.
Are you guys really saying your shifters flop over to the right in neutral...?

i believe when the tranny switched to the later synchros in 85 or so, the gearbox changed. in the 84's at least, it should spring to the 4/5 shift selector. i've taken it apart and there is nothing in there that will keep the shifter in the middle.
there is light spring pressure when you move it toward the middle and the 2/3 selector. then if you move it over to reverse/1st, there is much harder spring pressure. it's the way it's designed. you get used to it i guess.
if one of the springs is broken or disconected, the shifter will flop around between 2/3 and 4/5 shift area, but still not in the reverse/1
