Lightbulb LA Area Brake Fluid Flush Clinic 7/8

I had the pleasure of spending a couple hours on Saturday with Ryan P., as he used the pressure bleeder to get the air out of the clutch circuit on his GT. We added another bottle of brake fluid and flushed the brakes too. The clutch circuit was only a little muddy, since he'd already pushed more than half a quart of fluid through the clutch system trying to flush it the "old" way. Brake flush netted some more dirty fluid, and some particles out the rear calipers.

That brings us to a point. Many drivers are cruising around with wet/dirty fluid and most of those probably don't know it. Porsche recommends brake fluid replacement at no more than 2 year intervals. SCCA, PCA, and POC have requirements of 6 months to 1 year max between changes. How long has it been since your brake fluid was changed?

So it's probably time for a brake fluid flush clinic. Buy a couple quarts of your favorite fluid, come and use the jack/stands/flush pump here to install that fluid in your car. Biggest part of the work is jacking the car up and getting the wheels off. The flush part is pretty quick and easy. It takes maybe an hour for one person to do this, and that would be cut some with a couple helpers. Think about a Saturday clinic in a couple of weeks, starting at maybe 10am, maybe followed by a little afternoon fun ride up and down Angeles Crest to test the new fluid just a little.

Location is in Glendale, Ca, just above the intersection of the 2 (Glendale) and the 134 (Ventura) freeways. Easy access to Angeles Crest (maybe too easy...)from here. Several folks from the SoCal list are going to take advantage. Anybody interested?

If you get real good at it, you can bleed everything without lifting the car or removing any wheels. Haivng GTS or larger 5-spokes helps out.

Jim,

Not a bad idea. Know anywhere nearby that has them?

I'll be in touch as the date draws near.

Good idea, dr. bob!

We have been discussing having a fuel line replacement party soon. The main supply loop on my car is original, and after Shane's fire, I know I'm living dangerously. So, are a lot of other people.

Bob-

If I can get the TB/WP done over the 4th of July weekend (and if I can get a hall pass from SWMBO) count me in! I'd like to meet some of the SoCal addicts.....

Your telling "ME" it would only take an hour??? Or were you hoping I wouldn't see this thread, Ha ha!! I would probably have frozen bleeders that would break off and result in new lines and calipers.

Ron, that wouldn't be such a bad thing as compared to the foolishness we had experienced last time with your car. At least we would be able to take the calipers off and easily drill out the bleed screw holes! BTW, if there IS anything we need to look at from the last session, this would be a perfect opportunity.

Those coming--

Bring a couple quarts of your favorite fluid.

I'll be visiting with Jim to get a set of "spare" bleed screws and caps. Just in case...

Ryan's car reminded me to dig out a 11mm 6pt socket too, to help avoid any wrench slipping bleeder rounding.

Ryan-- How's that clutch holding up after the bleed/flush? Notice any improvement in brake pedal feel?

See you folks in July!

Those coming who don't know how te get here: PM me with your regular e-mail address, and I'll shoot you a map/directions page.

Bob,

Clutch could probably use another quick bleed honestly, ive had to adjust the pedal rod to get engagement again, but right now i have the lower cover off as I started to get some type of chatter. I remember it when i was realigning the piston from the slave into the clutch arm, the arm felt really loose, then as i drove the car some more this noise persisted, today i put the car on jack stands and tore into it to find that the small guide tube's two 6m bolts had come loose and need to be replaced as the guide tube is loose and not holding the release bearing where it needs to be, so i need to find some small bolts and put it back together tomorrow. But I was happy it was that as opposed to the throw out bearing, ive since read that its suggested to put red thread locker on the 2 above mentioned bolts.

I will also install a new thermostat as my car's running above the last white line, about 195 deg indicated by the gauge, so i hope that the new thermostat cures that problem as well.

I should be good to go in the next day or 2 at the most.

Brake pedal feel, i honestly havent noticed a difference but i had very little experience int he car prior two and dont think i ever really stepped on the brakes, the brakes saved my *** right after i left your house actually i nearly rear ended someone that like me wasnt paying much attention. (crossing fingers from now on)
