Why the heck is it that some people have this horrid disease one might call "Obsessive Compulsive Repaint Disorder"???? Seems I've seen my share of Porsches with "fresh paint" or "full repaint" or "just spent 3500 on full repaint" ....

I have never seen a perfect repaint. The closest was a local GTS, and even that had to go back for swirl removal. At least it didn't have flaking or bubbling or the classic flaking coat edges in the door sills. And to top it off, they often either don't paint past the outer skin, or they delete all stickers, including VIN!!

I think, personally, once a Porsche has had a repaint, it has become irreparable.

I'd rather drive a car with imperfect original paint than a repaint myself. That being said, my black car was originally very brown and the paint job is very nice.

Have you forgotten Chris Fords repaint...that is the best one I have seen on a 928 yet.....but then again...Chris spent all the time doing all the prep work, and all his hard work shows. IMO..the only way to paint a Porsche is to do all you can prior to giving it to the shop ..as they don't have a vested interest in your car...

Repaints can be done as nice or nicer than a factory job, it is just a matter of time and money and the proper facilities. Since we have already established on this forum that many people have more into a car than it is "worth", why not have proper paint work done. I have painted quite a few cars over the years and many don't deserve paint let alone an oil filter change. However, there are those rare ones on the market that are worth it.

You do all the stripping work and pull all the panels off the car that can be removed, pull all the seals etc and as long as the body work isn't extreme you can get it done for in the ball park of 6-7K for an excellent job. That leaves it up to the owner to reassemble and replace seals etc.

OK I'm willing to change it to: "I think, personally, once a Porsche has had a repaint, it has most likely become irreparable. The only exceptions are those few that have been repainted at great expense, and with great care".

As most probably know as I have mentioned before, I had the bumper covers, front fenders and hood painted on the black GTS and I believe it fits in your last statement. It was done correctly and looks great. I know what you are talking about though, I have seen many repaints that looked terrible.

H, I agree with you on a level, especially coming from me, who just repainted my shark myself. (details coming). My motivation was simple, my car started its life a light blue color, which I dont know. Then it was resprayed silver by a PO. They did a fairly decent job, not an earl scheib type spray and run, but a decent paint job. The problem was the paint they used did not stick to the bumpers at all, so my front bumper and rear bumper were peeling like crazy. On top of this they didnt remove the side rub strips and replace them so the paint around the rub strips was cracking. I wanted the rub strips gone anyway, and also I wanted to remove the Toyota side markers stuck on by the govt. I would much rather drive around in a shark repainted by me, not perfect, but much better looking than before, which was peeling, cracking, and generally ugly.

So, yeah, I think that the Obsessive Compulsive Repaint disorder is related to many other trends we have seen in developing in the last 10 years, like obsessive compulsive spoiler, carbon fiber, glowing lights, tv monitors, etc, etc, disorder.

Yes Chuck, I have had many Porsches with a panel here and there excellently repainted, but it seems the full repaint just doesn't work, except in very very few cases. I'm not sure if it's too much detail, too much work, or what.

What about a car that you brought back from the dead? I just spent $5000 for fenders, hood and a NICE quality jammed custom paint job. I dont think it makes any difference as long as it is done right.

H, I read this thread with interest because I'm getting ready for a repaint now. I bought this car recently (ebay item # 4620859751), and as you can see from the photos the top of the front bumper has flaked off, the bottom of both doors where the chip guard is located has flaked off, and the top of the rear hatch has also started flaking color off. The fenders, though not bad from 10 feet, up close you can see the paint is cracking. There is no rust anywhere though...

I worked in a shop doing paint when I was young, and I've done all my own repairs and bike painting for years... so I'm planning to do this job myself. Frankly, I can't afford to have someone else do the amount of work that I expect to be performed. To do this right, the mirrors, front and rear clips will need to be removed and sprayed separately. Body gaskets replaced while off. The engine compartment, door jambs and hatch jamb areas are good and will need to be masked out to the outer body shell to ensure they don't get the "overspray ugliness". For the rest of the body, my plan is to fix a few door dings, flat board it smooth over a shot of black. prime/seal and then paint the original "special" color of Copper Metalic.

Do you see another option... I can't see continuing to drive in this abused state... How would you do it?

I think a lot of sellers think new paint will "cinch" the deal. Unfortunately, they will get one just good enough to get the car sold to a "sucker". Then after a while the paint job begins to show its true worth; or lack thereof.

I agree with Garrity in that the time, prep work and facilities make all the difference in the world.

Mine was repainted a few years before I bought it and it's holding up very nicely; although I fall into the "Obsessive Compulsive Clean Disorder", which will hopefully help its longevity

There's the key. You can't afford to pay someone enough to do it right, and I think that is the point and the case with most jobs I've seen. Many painters can do a great job of a panel or two. I'm not convinced many can do the whole car properly

My '91 Euro GT needs paint now. The front bumper is pock marked. There are a couple of small rust spots around the passenger rear quarter window and at the base of the front windshield. The factory painted rear wing (option code xg8) has some cracks. Inconsiderate Foridians have gifted me numerous parking lot dings and what looks like a category 5 run in with a shopping cart on my rear bumper. Long story short, my car needs to be repainted if you ask me.

Unfortunately, I have been putting this off because I know that it will cost me north $5k to do it to my satisfaction. Thing is, I am into the car for the long haul so I will not do a $1k paint job. It is my baby, and if I am going to do something, I want to do it right. Supercharger, for example. No way to recover that 'investment', either.
