I mostly agree that it is very difficult to get a factory looking paint job and I always prefer a great condition original over a great condition paint job. But reality is the cars are driven and things happen which eventually creates the need for a paint job. I know my recently purchased Marine Blue has been completely repainted at some point (probably a while ago). Is it as good as factory, not really. Is it better than a factory paint job that sat in Nevada sun for 15 years, definitely! On my car one of the PO took all trim off, taped off the serial number stickers and then resprayed. Im as **** as they get so I see the imperfections but the average person thinks it looks great.

If you get a chance, look up Marc White at the OCIC in June. You will see an 84 Euro S with a fantastic paintjob!! He changed the color from a light blue metallic, to a deep Iris blue ( a later GTS color) Awesome, the only word to describe it!!!!!!

Chuck I saw that car and it is immaculate!!! I think we mostly expect a repaint to look that way, but ....

properly done color changes are the biggest bugger to pull off, imo... door jambs, under the hood, pretty much have to strip the entire body/chassis to really do it right... that's a whole different enchalada!!!

I agree, we all expect it but do we get it?? When I do the repaint on the Silverbulit, I may drive it to Wichita and have it done where Marc had his done. Craziest thing about it, it was at a collision repair shop that did mostly Hondas, etc. for their bread and butter. I talked to the guy at the OCIC who did Marc's and he was a super nice, super professional person. They took a lot of care and pride in that project.

I don't know a lot about this stuff, but a really good body man once advised me to never, never, never break the factory primer unless it was absolutely necessary. He advised taking pains to preserve that coat. FWIW.

The car had 5 or so coats of crap paint. Primer after primer. "I have done what I had to do" - and the aluminum had to be bare metal anyway. Every metal surface was down to bare, and then treated with the entire PPG system from the paint prep chemicals that bond to the metal all the way through to the three or four coats of urethane primer. Wet sanded sanding primer, etc. I even primed UNDER the body work.

The car is just rolled out on my driveway - the paint work was done at a barn in Poway, where there were very few to see the work.
