Default Gas Leak

When i overfill my 82 Euro S with gas, it starts to leak. I was wondering if this was suppose to happen, and if it isnt, how to fix it?

Nope, not suppose to leak. Where is it leaking from? Front/back? If it's leaking in the engine compartment DO NOT START THE ENGINE or bad things can happen.

If u overfill the tank, it will leak down behind the back wheel.

Sometimes when the gas gauge gets replaced the knurled retainer is not tightened well, as it takes a special wrench. There is an access under the carpet in the rear hatch area that allows you to change the gauge . If it is leaking, the area around the gauge will look like a small swimming pool.
There is supposed to be an o ring between the gauge and the tank.

BTW, you can make the special wrench out of a 3'' PVC "T" fitting using a hack saw. LOL

The o-ring under the cap of my sending unit was old causing some fumes and gas to leak out when 100% full.

If anyone has mounted an amplifier or anything else to the floor of the cargo area they may well have drilled holes in the top of the gas tank.

I had a similar issue, though it was more a dribble than a flood. It was the hose shown in the pic, the one on the right. Careful with the plastic hose fittings, they are fragile! More info here.

My tank leaks too when filled. The gas leaks down inside the right rear tire area. After every fill up the car always smells like gas inside.
Dave A. what are those hoses for in your pic?

Dave,

Did you notice that our early cars did not have the mounting bolt on the tank right next to the filler neck as the manual describes? (I'm in the process of replacing mine right now) When I removed I was like, did they forgot this assembly when they put my car together??? Figured they started later down the line.(possibly 80 or 81?) The tank I got from Rog100 has it and it's out of an 84. Just still strange that the manuals had it included for the early cars as well.

RDS, are you smelling it inside the car? If so, do you have the plastic cover over the sender unit? I never smelled it inside the car. Anyway, as I posted there is a lot more info in my writeup. Those hoses are vent lines. The one on the right goes through a frame rail(I cut it to remove the tank) and the one on the left goes to the expansion tank.

Yeah Chuck, I did notice that. At last year's PartHeaven swap meet, Rich S had an early tank that he was trying to sell, and it had the tab -- so I expected to have one too. I have an original set of WSMs from 1978, the 4-volume set. I'll have to look and see if they show it there. I don't think it's necessary -- at least on my car -- because there is that big strap that wraps around the filler neck and holds it in place. Do later cars have that strap?

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem on my 79 Euro. Turned out to be the seal on the sending unit. It has a big nut that is turned with a special wrench. I used large channel locks. I removed the tank, replaced all hoses I could find, replaced the sending unit seal and it works great now. You even hear the hiss when the gas cap is removed. I found where gas had been setting and evaporating on the top of the tank. Scary. It is a nasty job and I smelled of gas for 2 weeks after. It was, however, a job worth doing. It wasn't that hard just messy.

Good Luck

Dave,

If I can remember right, the later models have the strap as well. (I think) Funny though, as I took off the snap ring and then the protective flap, and the big rubber seal around the filler, I expected to see it just as the wsm illustrated. I was looking all around in there and was scratching my head.
BTW, when I took out the big rubber seal in there about 10 pounds of mud and crap came out with it.
