Yeah Chuck these things can build up a lot of crap in the rear fenderwells. Mine wasn't that bad, but there was definitely a buildup.

Rich, the sender is mounted at that large knurled fitting you see on the tank in my pic above. It is in the top surface of the tank, and is accessed through a hole in the floor in the hatch area. More info on that here. It sounds to me like you are missing the cap shown in the first pic on that page, and that the sender or return hose is leaking.
