Well I guess you could do something different... but be aware the controller dissipates a lot of power while its dimming - so its not really practical to say set the level to 50% permanently...

The way its designed now you switch the light on or off and the dimming is preset so it always fades up fairly quickly and after a delay slowly fades out
so the control doesn't affect the rates just acts as an overide. On the later cars (S4+) the delay is already implemented so its just the fading.

On an S4+ its about 60W of interior lighting so its a lot to dim.

Looks pretty clean, Alan... where exactly does that mount in the GTS? I have most if not all the parts to do this mod, just not enough time lately. Those lights are interesting, Heinrich... P/N? Any pics of the mods, or pics of the unit before the mods?

Dave,
S4+'s (or is it just digital pod S4+...) have two panels like this below the main pod instruments mounted vertically behind the column stalks each side - this is the RHS - the LHS is a mirror image. LHS has the illumination pot and a blank on USA cars - on Euros it has the dashboard reset switch there (pod has rear fog switch). RHS has the intermittent pot and a blank on GTS or the intensive washer switch on S4's. Its a nice looking solution and needs to be because this is more visible than the 'after-thought' pots under the pod on the OB's...

OK so this change must have been related to the digital dashboard upgrade in '89 then... I guess they needed a new switch (Euro) for the new dashboard...

So do the early S4's still have the pots mounted like for the OB's - way under the pod...

H, are you sure they are that modern?

Thanks Alan, I thought that's where it went but wasn't sure.

LOL Dave .. .the biggest win for me is that there is little chance of a car fire. These units are all sealed-up on the positive pole side, unlike ours that almost force the psts together on installation, as well as having them sit open behind the trim.

H,
This from a while back - Well I found the lights but not in black ... still looking for those...

Sounded like you got a harness with it - I did not but was pleased I had a multiway IDC connector that was close to the r4equired sizes when cut down and has the right connector pitch. I used a punch down tool to set it and some JB weld for extra hold and insulation. I found no issues with fit and was able to mount these in the roof with no modifications. I added male quick connects on the tails so I had no need to modify the stock wiring at all.

I really do like these: Golf/Jetta Mk4 Interior Lights... According to my local VW dealer they were never made in black... Ha!!

Nice find H! big improvement

Unfortunately they do take different sized bulbs than the Porsche (Hella) units - so my LED bulbs won't be useful in these

Alan

Anyone need interior x9/x10 LED super bright white LED bulbs?
Anyone need interior roof light fixtures?

Yes its a light grey - H got some of the "black market" unavailable black ones somewhere (I suspect its from a Euro version since the US dealer denies all knowledge...)

The connectors were actually easy for me to do because I have a big box of junk... but might be challenging in general unless you can get the VW harness. This might be a good scrapyard project - get the whole thing fitting & harness end then you can make the same tail I did to plug in the factory loom ends.

They are nice lights - if your trim has migrated past the stock fitting due to shrinkage - this makes a nice solution and is designed for exactly the same hole dimensions.
The operation is exactly like the stock unit except the lens rocks longways.

Credit to H!
