oh ok..... so neither of the mechanics have seen the car or been questioned about the possible cause for the shake since they originally worked on it. I misunderstood & thought your uncle was taking it to the P-dealer to look at it for the cause of the shake.

HISTORIC NOTE: after the original mec (private own shop)did all the breaks, balljoints, bushing,RR drive axle and the hypercoil and shock kit, i test drove her for about hr, on back roads main roads and the highway,, all was real good except a shake on the highway. Thats when i took her in for an alignPOrsche dealership), and when i picked her up the saga started.

Guys....I sent animal a pm this morning. My lift is available this weekend, and next. Saturday or Sunday, pick a day. Mind you, I am about an hour from Manchester. If the car is barely drivable, it might be a good idea to either get a trailer of find a lift more local.

In any event, either day is open to you and anyone who wants to, can drop by. Let me know.

It does sound to me like the motor mounts are in question. With a lift, that should be easy to check....Get the car up in the air, remove the upper cross brace and carefully lift the engine up to see if the mounts are sheared off. Check the drivers side one especially, as torque would lift the engin on that side and if the mount is torn the resultant twisting COULD explain the exhaust system becoming seperated. Look also at the underside of the (tower brace) cross member to see if the top of the engine is coming in contact with the bar....

G

PMs to both you and Tim.

Keep us posted here on what you find with the car....the 'listers are a source of knowledge that is hard to beat. Since Tim's car is an 81 automatic, perhaps owners with that my specific knowledge can pitch in on the diagnosis. I suggested motormounts be looked at carefiully as it sounds like the drivetrain is twisting in place.....any other ideas?

If the mounts are broken, you've got a tough one. I was going to donate a Jager speedmount I have as a quick fix to get animal on the road, but the won't help broken mounts.

MM broken anyworse than just replacing them? or you think there is other damage? I thought replacing MM was standard DIY... still better then shot TT or TC right?

Probably not too bad, unless the powertrain did other damage while it was moving around.

well i did alot of checking under the car, both rear mounts show a tear at the front were the rubber conects to the metal. as for the front didnt get a good look , took some pics, but havnt figured out how to size them down yet. In other infor, we have a 79 5sp as a parts car and its lower radiator hose show contact w/ the power steering pump... is this a common problem? ( pully nut cutting into the driverside lower radiator hose)

Also with the mid muffler back, off the car and some supporting of the rest the vibration isnt so bad till it hits 3k or so then it comes on hard, sound like its right under my feet or the front of the TT. The vibration hits a harmonic balance that then lasts under 3k as i let off the gas,kinda''GGggrrrrrgggrrrr..grrr'' gota love them typed sound affects!
also checked that all the sparkplugs were getting spark/ havent pulled the plugs yet.

Yeah, you have to watch that lower hose. I discovered the same thing -- almost too late -- and trimmed about 1-1/2" off the replacement. Problem solved!

Actually, it was a bit different, the belt was cutting into mine. Maybe this is partly because of the mounts.

I don't think that stuff will turn the corners you need on the bottom hose. Maybe on the top hose though.
