CHAPTER III: Driving back home from the dealer, rear muffler FELL OFF!!!
..that took care of some of the viblation, and man dos it sound
, then found that the air tube off the cat was rattling something terrible/ that was a quick fix...... rears up on ramps..heres my check list....fans OK belts are iffy powerstering pulley seems out of sorts, the pulley bolt is wearing into the radiator hose!!!! but at idle its about 12 to 13mm from it...so thiers alot of vibration movement!!! motor rocks alot at revs, the rear trans mounts look torn!... i can lift it a tad and see movment..should that be? and is thier anything holding the front of the trans were it connects to the TQ tube? well thats the list so far.... i still need to get the front up and check motor mounts... here is a question if the trans mounts and the motor mounts are bad and the hole thing twists wich wraps up the exhaust and breaks it so its vibrating like 10 rictor scale earthquake..O and wears the PS pump into the hose, would that start explaining some things?

giovanni, i belive thats true, but mabe my mounts are still good as in they are not compressed just torn, im pretty sure the trans mounts are torn, i can see a rip in both trans mounts.
im going to look at the trans mounts in the 79' we have as a parts car, hope the PO didnt remove them (manual car/ missing the rear).
I wish i had a good running 928 so i could cross check my findings on one that has good parts.

The transmission, TT, and engine are one unit for purposes of this discussion. That UNIT is attached to the rest of the car at 3 points. The 2 motor mounts on either side of the engine with 4 bolts on each side and the third location is where 2 bolts on the front side of the main aluminum spar (looks like a roof truss, heavy duty) of the back suspension. These 2 bolts are kind of tough to see and get at (I've done it).
If you remove those 2 bolts the transmission and TT can be pushed back about 3 inches. The driveshafts on either side will just flex on their universal joint when you do this. Only those 3 mounting points attach the powertrain to the rest of the vehicle.
Score another one for porsche dealerships and 928's. Tommytomaso, you say the motor rocks when revved, then the mounts sound OK. Some digital pictures would help. But if you can drive it and a dealer let you drive it away, how bad can it be? You really need to have some shark specialists consult on your case.

TV, based on that information, if one part of the UNIT were attached, and the others moved freely, what would happen? AKA... engine attached at MM, but tranny swinging free... next, is there any reason the 2 bolts on the tranny would be removed even if by mistake while working on the rear suspension? or howabout the driveaxle? things may be falling into place here... I am not going to jump yet and assume anything, but supposing the mechs who did the driveaxle unbolted these 2 bolts, and either didnt torque them correctly after, or some other mistake... could that cause these issues... I mean, now we are looking at a dominoe effect, but, the original cause...

Since the powertrain is one unit and the movement i described above about pushing the tranny and TT back can only take place when the bell housing bolts are removed for engine pulling, which was my case, in your situation the tranny could not move rearwards. It is still attached by the motormounts. If those 2 bolts were no longer there for some strnage reason the tranny might fish tail very slightly or vibrate, BUT it is highly unlikely that they are missing.
Everyone here is throwing darts in a dark room. We would really need to examine the patient. If you could get your meet scheduled perhaps with a lift involved, a number of us self proclaimed experts could scratch our heads together.

If you can arrange a lift, don't pay fot it, and we can get a group together on a nice week-end day in the next couple of week-ends when you are home I would be willing to give you any benefit of my experience.
I know there are many others here in NE that could also contribute and I would like them to step up here and lend a hand. I think it would be a great excuse to get a bunch of nice sharks to get together and help out someone who could use a diversion from his current grind. Believe me the ride up there is not far or tedious in a 928.
You could also say that you have heard the best sounding street 928 there is.
Perhaps if a lift becomes available to you, you can start a new thread about a meet at the location for fun and a little work.

Ok.... I am not one to know anything here, just trying to learn myself & hope that its not too serious for your shark.
But I'm confused(doesn't take too much). If a non dealer mechanic did the alignment work, what did they say when you questioned them about the problem? Did you take it back to them? Did they drive it after the alignment? No problems from their end? Then if you took it to the Porsche dealer afterwards for them to diagnose the shaking problem, what did they find? They let you drive off yesterday with the problem not solved? Surely if they drove it they had to acknowledge a problem? What dealer would not then have a laundry list of items they'd want to replace??
I still say if the original mechanics performing the alignment & then the Porsche dealer both looked at it & did not offer any diagnosis or resolution to the problem, get coordinated with Gretch ASAP & take him up on his offer to look at the car. The shaking causing your rear muffler to fall off sounds like pretty serious vibration even if the cure ends up not being major. It will be interesting to see what the final cause is.
Good Luck!!

k, here is the deal... I have a PM already to gretch, I am just waiting on a response. he hasnt been logged on rennlist since friday. if anyone knows him on an other than rennlist world, feel free to drop him a line about me dropping him a line. due to my time constraints when I am home, I will personally have only one weekend that I will be able to work on her...I will have plenty of week days, but only one weekend, as I will only have 2 home, and one I am going to montreal with my girlfriend, my best friend and his fiance. and to reply to the last thread, it was the P mechs who did the align. my mechs did the rest of the work, and the issues did not show up untill after getting the car from the P car dealership
