They say Inrdischot Red was only available on the early cars, both of the '87's I've had were Indrischot. One over black and one over Linen interior.

Indian Red, makes Guards Red look a little orange.
I thought they were identical?

No, The "928" in the rear trim appears on very early cars also - have seen it on a 4.5L non S.

My car has the 928 stamped trim.
This is a great thread. I hope it made the top 10 in 2006!

My '79 has it too. I think it's original rubber.

Did you know Porsche have different paint codes so maybe different shades of meteor metallic? L Y7Z, L961, 9Q, LM7W, Y5Y5
One of my rear quarters was repainted with meteor metallic grey supposedly according to the paint code on the panel on the door pillar (961 9 3 Y5). It is a different shade to the rest of the car but it does match the touch paint I have which was also mixed according to the code on the panel on the door pillar.

-Did you know that the some 78-79 928 cis fuel pumps uses a ballast resistor that lets up on the resistance to give more voltage upon cranking to up the fuel pressure for start up then the resistance is place back on the fuel pump power line for running conditions? But this can easily tweak to add get more fuel under boosted conditions

DID you know that there is very tunable aftermarket solution for cis to efi conversion? And this unit that came stock is already built for boost 3bar map sensor, elec. waste gate control, and it will even pull timing under high boost. All this and it can be had for $75 at a junk yard also did I mention re-mapping your boost settings on the fly via laptop
I was disappointed to not see any followup information on this one...

Lxxx and those other non Lxxx codes are different way of saying exact same paint. Lxxx is used in build sticker while it and other style code can both be in door post sticker at same time. Different Lxxx can be different code for same color too. There are several colors used in last few MY's for example which were available both as old style bad for environment paints and water based paints. Bad stuff had one code while water stuff had another.

Most metallic paints especially silver grey fade over time so new paint does not match old paint. Plus how it is sprayed temperature, humidity, air pressure etc. ALL have some effect on the end result. Only a custom color match where they make the recipe for the color then test spray and compare to the car THEN adjust the mix has much of a chance of matching ! Even then under different lighting it usually shows. Which is why often the damaged panel is painted as well as a blending on the adjacent panels with a clear coat over all is used to hide the lack of a perfect match. Then over time the repaired panel will age at a different rate....all of which means you can not really match colors !!!

I just had my hatch painted in order to repair the butcher job a PO did in mounting an S4 wing I had taken off. The color appears to match perfectly but there's much more metallic glitter on it than the rest of the car. When I first got the car, I thought it was all original paint, but in different light I can see that the passenger door is a bit different, and the left rear quarter panel appears to have a blended area that's difficult to see. You can't see any of this except in bright sunlight, and even then sometimes only at particular angles.

Interestingly, the driver door matches perfectly in all respects, but appears to have some orange peel on it that leads me to believe it was repainted as well.

Yes the metallic flakes settle differently based on many factors.

Sounds like an expensive way to achieve a slightly better but less than 100% solution; I will learn to live with what I have - my impression is that full body re-sprays are extremely more expensive & are only good until the next car park incident that demands paint work.

yeah, sorry, my '79 has it too. I meant that the 87 is the only S4 to have it. But it seems that may be wrong as someone else posted saying they have it too on a >87 S4.
